Networking for the Apocalypse
You don't know what you don't know. The ability to put ignorance into high-gear has never been so intensified as The Information Age comes into full bloom. We have the power to control and personalize our many "feeds" to mirror our unique proclivities. God forbid we should be presented with ideas that upset or challenge our perfect vision of the World. We take to facebook, Twitter, Linkedin et al so we can force our correct parameters upon our "friends"........this is the world we live in......this is who we have become.
Please don't misunderstand me, I am part of this World and a full participant. If you downloaded my body of work on FB you would see many a diatribe directing the ignorant towards a better life! LOL, no, I don't think I was wrong.......rude maybe.
The problem with this scenario is the echo chamber it creates and the resulting extremism. You don't know what you don't know and the only way to know is to be humble and coachable.
I recommend networking; And I don't mean the "collection of names of maybe acquaintances" that you brag about ad nauseum. I mean taking the time to reach out and have conversations, coffee and cocktails with friends and strangers. I mean sitting down with interesting (and sometimes not) people and discovering their point of view. Disagreement is not a character flaw and truth is universal.
After all, having a broad and deep network of ACTUAL people you can call on will be the currency of the future. With all the noise and the rapid shifts in markets due to government largess and technological advancement it is important to know what is happening "behind the scenes." Quite often the opportunity is lost at press release.
The coming apocalypse cannot be overstated and, for many, it will be more of a rebirth. You could call it a renaissance or even tribulation. I know those are strong words. I know people will call me crazy. But, the changes that are coming as a result of the proper application of A.I., algorithms and Block-chain will bring more efficiency to human interaction than has ever been seen in recorded history. Don't doubt me! :)
You need to prepare yourselves for what is coming down the pike. Mind you there will be many charlatans and clever proprietors offering Oil of Snake, but the real McCoy will be very clear. Money never comes quickly and the fundamentals of business will not change. The only change that is coming is the function of how value is exchanged and the efficiency of work and resource manipulation.
There will be many fits and starts, many failures, missteps, and false gods. But make no mistake, that the end result may very well see your livelihood completely wiped out. So, what do you do?
The first is to come to grips with the reality that this will happen with or without you; So you may as well embrace it. Second, begin networking to see where you might fit in this emerging economy. Talk to as many different people as you can. Information is the essence of this new age. The more connected you are to the information, and those who are executing on viable ideas the better off you will be.
Keep also in mind that even though you might not see a direct causation to an industry, there will be spill over and ancillary effect. Meaning, you will be shocked many times by how seemingly "non-tech" industries are completely changed or wiped out.
The good news is on the consumer's side (Cheaper, better and more efficient) and with the entrepreneur (Goliath getting knocked down=opportunity) who embraces and executes on a novel idea. It will be a wild and fun ride. I invite you to join us!

7 年Very well written, mike. The “echo chamber” is the reason I removed myself from all forms of social media except this one. I find people much easier to live with when I don’t know how ignorant, self-serving, or just plain wrong they are on a regular basis. It works in the other direction as well, as I have some very strong opinions that are, at times, better kept to myself. If I don't have an pulpit to spew my sometimes ill-informed or poorly researched opinions, I simply don't.
