Be a networker, not a self-promoter

One thing I've learned in business is that if you're short on resources, then you're short on people.
That's because people control access to any resource you may need - which includes critical items such as money, labor, or advice.
?
In order to get access to people and the resources they control, it's important to learn how to become a good networker.
Essentially, a good networker is a person who is a relationship builder, a connector, and someone who knows how to spot opportunities.
The problem is, many people fail to realize that in order to be a true networker, they must also be givers and not just receivers.
This balance of giving and receiving is key, because if someone is only out to receive something, then most likely they're only about self-gain.
And anyone who is just about self-gain is a self-promoter in disguise and not a true networker.?
?
To illustrate this point more vividly, here are the major differences between a networker and a self-promoter:
?
Networkers
?- value people's time
?- follow through on their word
?- want to help others (and themselves)
?- do not need to get anything in return for their help
?- feel bad when they don't follow through and apologize for it
?
Self-promoters
?- do not respect other people's time
领英推荐
?- are fickle and indifferent with their word
?- only care about self and place others on the back burner
?- are transactional instead of seeking to be transformational
?- do not care if they ghost people and may get a rush from doing so
?
Case in point, nobody can get through life and business on their own merit.
It takes help to get from point A to point B, and networking with others is a very effective way to get access to the resources you need.
?
But, never forget that we're all a part of the global ecosystem and it's important to be both a giver and taker of resources.
In sum, self-promoters are just takers, while networkers are both takers and givers.
?
What type of person are you?
?
Until next time.

1 年"transactional instead of seeking to be transformational" - that is a power statement. Seek to be transformational, not transactional. Networking is not new to me, but networking intentionally is. In the past, opportunities to network were just a part of every place that I have worked. So all of this is helpful in learning to network in directions that I want to grow. Thanks.
