Network Weaving: How & Why to start now

Network Weaving: How & Why to start now

You've heard the term. You may have wondered how to do it, or if you're already doing enough networking. Network Weaving takes it all up a notch. It is intentional and powerful. And the best, anyone can do it, no matter what level or position you are in your organization.

This simple, powerful, definition of network weaving comes from the great @June Holley who has been creating better communities for 40 years. She is being interviewed by @Wellbeing Blueprint.

Q: What is network weaving?

A: ... It’s paying attention to the relationships around you and noticing who’s missing, who’s not being listened to, and helping create healthier, deeper relationships. You do this by bringing new people in, by connecting people within your existing networks, and helping them get to know each other so they can work together.

Q: What is the difference between networking and network weaving?

A: When people think of networking, they think of passing out business cards to people at a conference and selling themselves. So networking is all about yourself. But when you move to network weaving, it’s about the community. It’s about the people around you and helping them build a network that can be capable of support and action.

Network weaving is a powerful tool for building stronger communities. Everyone can do it! It starts with the intention of being inclusive. It encourages you to reach out. It inspires you to hear other voices. And, in the long run, it builds a stronger, better served community.

It's not just about serving the underserved (though that is one key purpose), Network Weaving works for any organization that wants to be actively engaged in the community it serves in order to be more effective.

Get started with these 3 actions:

  • Think about the Vision of your organization. What is the problem you want to solve? This is broader than your Mission (the work you do), this is about the change you want to make in the world.

For example: If your Vision is to end hunger, your Mission may be a soup kitchen, or collecting food donations, or educating moms & dads on healthy diets.

  • Now make a list of other organizations (nonprofit, for-profit, government, religious) who share your Vision. Their Mission may be very different than yours but you share a dream for a better world.
  • Connect with these other organizations. Start with social media connections, or an email. Attend - or host - events. Be intentional about building a network of people who share your Vision.

Think about what Network Weaving could mean for you, your organization, and your community! There are many possibilities including new sources of funding, new volunteers and donors, fresh ideas, and, most importantly, movement towards that big dream, your Vision for those you serve.

I participated on the Strategic Planning Circle today for the Association of Nonprofit Specialists and experienced Networking Weaving first hand -- it was generous, generative and uplifting -- excited to see where it leads.
