Network Rail is asking lorry, bus and coach operators to consider how they can reduce the risk of bridge strikes.

3 ways to help avoid bridge strikes

You can reduce the risk of striking bridges by following these 3 points:

• check your height during walkaround checks and note it on the inside of the cab, this should be re-done if you have swapped trailers or changed vehicles.
• plan the route using a road atlas which includes bridge heights, and stick to the route. If you use a sat nav, you should ensure it is designed for your vehicle size
• watch out for road signs warning of height restrictions, and obey them

The DVSA's Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness includes a section on effective daily walkaround checks.

DVSA Chief Executive, Gareth Llewellyn said:

“There’s real headway being made and we’re seeing a drop in bridge strikes, but we must keep up this momentum to avoid these dangerous and costly incidents.

“You should ensure your drivers are doing their walkaround checks and noting the height of their vehicle every day.

“While DVSA can fall back on regulatory action to deal with bridge strikes, I’d prefer to see no incidents at all, with operators and drivers checking heights before every journey.”

Network Rail has worked with the Department for Transport to produce these guides for reducing the risk of bridge strikes.
