Network like crazy! (but not too crazy)
How to expand your professional network

Network like crazy! (but not too crazy)

I’m always telling people that the best way to progress their career is to “network like crazy”. There is a professional and respectful way to do that. Here are my top 3 tips for better networking:?

1. Less is more

The advice to "network like crazy" doesn't mean reaching out to as many senior people as possible, asking them to join your professional network. Instead, my advice is to be circumspect. Identify a few key people. Take your time and make the effort to develop a professional relationship with them in a way that is respectful. To do that, follow the advice of tip 2 and 3 below.

2. Ask an insightful question

Once you've identified a person that you'd like to be in contact with, introduce yourself to them with a short message that includes an insightful question. So what question should you ask? Well, do your homework. Show them that you understand their contribution to the space in which they are working. Ask a question that demonstrates that you've taken the time to read a paper that they have written, for example. And make sure that the question that you ask is easy to answer. Assume that they are busy and have less than a minute to read and reply to your email.

3. Don't be annoying

How not to be annoying:

  1. If they don't reply to your email - live with it (don't email them again)
  2. If they do reply to your email, keep the email exchange light. Say "thanks" and leave it at that for a few months.
  3. Don't ask for a job or about how to get a job (seriously!!)

In short...

Focus on the right people. Make an effort to develop respectful relationships. Avoid being annoying (DON'T ask for a job). You'll find that over time you have a meaningful network of professionals. When the time is right, opportunities will emerge. Be patient.

Happy networking.
