Europe 2030: A Digital Powerhouse

While KPIs can be subject to Goodhart’s law dynamics, it’s difficult to dispute that they can serve as a useful guide to action. When Digital Europe published A Stronger Digital Europe, one of its innovations was establishing a KPI-led approach to gauging society’s digital progress – an approach influencing, among others, the European Commission’s own Digital Decade strategy of March 2021. Now, Digital Europe is ready with an updated manifesto, Europe 2030: A Digital Powerhouse, which gauges both the progress on previous KPIs and sets forth new ones.

How might AI affect the economy?

Few have thought about potential AI futures as deeply as independent AI researcher Carl Shulman. In this four-hour podcast with Rob Wiblin of 80,000 Hours, Carl explores various scenarios in depth. Contrary to most economists, Carl is certain that AI will lead to radical economic growth. For example, output could potentially double in three months, and incomes could grow 100 times or more. Carl’s model of growth from AI also includes an explanation of why AI has so far not led to this kind of explosive economic growth. Highly recommended, even if only to appreciate Carl’s meticulous step-by-step reasoning.

Consultancy revenue landscape indicates AI interest

A key indicator of companies’ growing interest in AI is the dramatic shift in consultancy revenues. According to Tripp Mickle in a recent New York Times Opinion piece, Boston Consulting Group now earns a fifth of its revenue from AI-related work, up from zero percent two years ago. Accenture, which booked $300 million in AI sales last year, has already secured $900 million in the first quarter of 2024.
