Why is Net Zero Important for Businesses?

There are three main reasons why net zero is important for business:

  • The Commercial Imperative: Clients and customers increasingly demand proof of meaningful progress on sustainability.
  • Strengthening Legislation: Regulatory frameworks such as the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme (ESOS), and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) require large companies to measure their carbon footprint.
  • Growing Awareness: Awareness about the urgency of the climate crisis is growing among business leaders and employees alike. Employees are increasingly seeking employers whose values align with their own, adding internal pressure to commit to net zero.

These driving forces collectively highlight why businesses should work towards net zero.

By addressing commercial demands, complying with legislation, and meeting growing environmental awareness, businesses can remain resilient with net zero and avoid being left behind as more leaders work to strengthen their ESG.

Strategic Sustainability with Planet Mark (case studies)

Planet Mark members Sanderson Design Group plc. and Prologis UK are leading in their industries by achieving business objectives and sustainability targets with net zero.

Let's dive into their inspiring journeys.

Sanderson Design Group: Refining Sustainability in Luxury Interiors

Sanderson Design Group, Planet Mark Certified for 5 years

Navigating Challenges

Sanderson Design Group plc. , a leading name in luxury interior furnishings with brands like Clarke & Clarke, Harlequin, and Morris & co, has long pursued sustainable practices.

However, as a publicly listed company in a carbon-intensive industry, the need for a more refined and comprehensive strategy became clear.

Facing heightened expectations from investors, customers, and employees, Sanderson recognised the necessity for a robust sustainability approach to align with evolving standards and the growing environmental demands of its key stakeholders.

Partnering for Progress

To elevate their sustainability efforts, Sanderson turned to Planet Mark, valuing our credibility and rigorous approach to target setting.

Together, we supported them in setting an ambitious net zero target and developing a clear, actionable roadmap and carbon reduction plan to achieve it.

Delivering Results

The collaboration led to significant improvements, such as adopting digital printing technologies that reduced water and gas usage, cutting energy consumption by 9% and natural gas usage by 14%.

A key component of this success was the comprehensive employee engagement workshops led by Planet Mark's Senior Engagement Manager, Hannah Dean-Wood . These workshops were instrumental in ensuring the entire Sanderson team, especially those in international sales, could confidently and authentically communicate Sanderson's sustainability story and actively engage in short-term and long-term net zero actions.

Prologis UK: Pioneering Sustainable Logistics Development

Prologs UK, Planet Mark Certified for 16 years

Building a Sustainable Foundation

Prologis UK , a leader in logistics property development, has embedded sustainability into its core operations for over a decade. Committed to reducing carbon emissions, Prologis has partnered with Planet Mark to measure and lower the whole-life carbon of its projects.

Enhancing Sustainability with Planet Mark

Our partnership has been instrumental in Prologis's sustainability journey. Planet Mark's Development Certification has been crucial for setting clear sustainability specifications for new developments, ensuring significant carbon reductions.

As a result, across 88 projects, they have reduced the whole-life carbon per project by 28% and saved 630,297 tons of C02 - equivalent to the electricity consumption of 122,640 homes for an entire year.

Achieving Net Zero Goals

Building a solid foundation of carbon reduction with Planet Mark has positioned Prologis UK for net zero success.

So far, they have set ambitious targets to achieve net zero across its global portfolio by 2040 and construct buildings that surpass net zero standards. This includes striving for BREEAM 'Outstanding' certification, a prestigious accolade for projects that meet rigorous sustainability criteria and achieve an EPC A+ rating.

Prologis UK has already completed five BREEAM 'Outstanding' buildings, with another in the pipeline, setting new industry benchmarks for sustainability.

Their ongoing partnership with us and commitment to net zero highlights their dedication to pioneering sustainable practices, reinforcing their leadership in the industry, and aligning with the values of their customers, supply chain partners, and communities.
