Net Zero Newsletter – Updates On Our ASRS Course

As we approach the final stages of our Navigating the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) course, marked by the recent release of Module 11 on climate risks, the team at 100% Renewables has been diligently refining every aspect to ensure you stay on top of recent developments in the market. On March 27, 2024, the Treasury Laws Amendment (Financial Market Infrastructure and Other Measures) Bill 2024 was introduced in the House of Representatives. Schedule 4 of the bill introduces Australia’s new climate-related financial disclosure regime, impacting reporting requirements for organisations.

We have updated our ASRS course to reflect key changes to the draft legislation:

  • Revised reporting start date: Group 1 has a revised start date for reporting, now starting on 1 January 2025 (instead of 1 July this year). Please revisit Module 6 in our course for further details.
  • Clarification on reporting groups: We've elaborated further on the breakdown of different reporting groups under ASRS climate legislation, providing detailed insights into how Australian companies are categorised. Groups are now split into size thresholds, NGER reporters and asset owners. Explore this update in Module 5 of the course.

These updates are also reflected across all our YouTube videos and blog posts. ?

Since our last newsletter, we have also added the following new content to the course:

  • Module 8: The ripple effect of ASRS and how eventually, businesses of all sizes are impacted
  • Module 9: Steps to get your organisation ready for ASRS compliance
  • Module 10: Developing carbon footprints under ASRS
  • Module 11: Assessing and managing climate risks and opportunities under ASRS

Hear from our participants:

In each edition of our newsletter, we will be sharing feedback from our participants to give you a sense of the experiences and outcomes from our course. This month, we feature a review from Daniella Mac Dowell, Sustainable Business Program Manager - CitySwitch and Better Business Partnership at North Sydney Council who recently completed the course:

SBTi updates

Recent changes within the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) represent a turning point for companies committed to aligning their emissions reduction targets with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to well below 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. In March, the SBTi revised the status of over 200 companies, including 17 from Australia, to ‘commitment removed’. Among these are major corporations such as Microsoft and Walmart, which represent a market capitalisation exceeding $4 trillion. This status update highlights the rigorous demands of the SBTi, particularly regarding Scope 3 emissions—those that occur indirectly upstream and downstream from a company's direct activities. These emissions are notoriously difficult to manage due to their complexity and the limited control companies have over them.

However, in a significant move last week, the SBTi announced that it proposes to allow “environmental attribute certificates”, including carbon offsets to abate certain Scope 3 emissions. This decision has stirred diverse reactions: while carbon market advocates applaud it as a step that could boost demand for offsets, some SBTi staff and advisors have voiced strong criticism, questioning the scientific basis of the decision and raising concerns about potential greenwashing. This development raises important questions about the balance between environmental integrity and economic realities. Many businesses struggle with Scope 3 reductions and are cautious about committing to SBTi's rigorous standards.

As we continue to navigate these complex issues, we stress the importance of pulling all possible levers – reduce your Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the first instance, engage with your value chain to reduce Scope 3 emissions and invest in climate impact projects beyond your value chain. Make sure to select high-integrity carbon credits for mitigation beyond your value chain. ?

At the end of last year, we ran a webinar with Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM) on the importance of investing in high integrity carbon offsets to ensure additionality, permanence and avoidance of leakage and avoidance of double counting. Please revisit this webinar by listening to or watching our podcast as we break down? the intricacies of carbon offsetting and discuss a clear pathway for strategic carbon credit purchasing. ?

TEM offers a fast turnaround offsetting service that allows any company access to high quality carbon projects through their TEM Online platform. TEM’s project portfolio meets the Climate Active offset project requirements, with all orders retired on independent registries to verify your purchase. If you need support or technical assessment please reach out to us, or if you’re ready to offset check out TEM Online. ?

Meanwhile, SBTi will continue its work to define Scope 3 guardrails for use of carbon credits, which is expected to be published in July. Stay tuned for further updates on this front.?
