Net Zero Newsletter – Planting Your Way To Net Zero
Hi,
Reflecting on a busy month, I am thrilled to share the highlights from my recent trip to Northern Victoria. Partnering with local governments and AusIndustry, I had the privilege of being the keynote speaker at two important events that aimed to reshape the business landscape through sustainability. ?
At the "Driving Business Profit with Zero Emissions" event held in Greater Shepparton on 14 November, I engaged with local businesses, sharing insights on decarbonisation and sustainability. I emphasised the strategic advantages of integrating sustainability practices into business operations, underlining its significance beyond a mere moral obligation.
The audio of my keynote was recorded and published in a podcast episode of Climate Conversations by Robert Mclean. You can listen to the full episode here - Targeting Net Zero: Barbara Albert from 100% Renewables speaks in Shepparton. ?
In a separate episode of Climate Conversations, I also had the pleasure of being interviewed by Robert Mclean. In this 30-minute interview, we discussed how businesses can view net zero as an opportunity for change. You can listen to the full interview here - Interview: Barbara Albert – optimism trumps pessimism and the climate crisis is an opportunity. ?
At the "BEAT THE POWER BILLS - Business Program Launch" event in Bendigo on 15 November, ?I presented on practical sustainability strategies and ways to reduce carbon emissions in businesses. The event encouraged a shared commitment to environmental responsibility within the local business community.
“How to confidently buy high-integrity carbon offsets” webinar
Last week, on 22 November, we ran a webinar titled "How to confidently buy high-integrity carbon offsets” in partnership with Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM). We discussed the broader implications of carbon offsetting, exploring its synergy with decarbonisation strategies and addressing key concepts like carbon neutrality. Our discussions touched on crucial topics such as greenwashing and greenhushing, offering a comprehensive view of the offset market. ?
Here is a snippet from the webinar:
Nicolas talks about identifying high-integrity carbon offsets.
Stay tuned as we're gearing up to release this content as an episode on our "Driving Net Profit with Zero Emissions" podcast!

Road to Decarbonisation E-learning Program
We're also celebrating another successful collaboration as we wrap up the delivery of the e-learning program, "Road to Decarbonisation". Sponsored by Bridgestone for NATROAD (The National Road Transport Association) members, this program has been a key initiative addressing the pressing need for emissions reduction for SMEs, coming from large freight companies and retailers. It also highlights the weight of stakeholder pressure and the impending implementation of the new Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS), see below. ? The program's final phase, featuring three comprehensive modules, was launched recently and is now available on NatRoad’s website. Check it out!
ASSB - new Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards
A significant stride towards globally aligned mandatory climate-related financial reporting has been made with the Australian Accounting Standards Board’s (AASB) release of the Exposure Draft ED SR1 of the new Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) - Disclosure of Climate-related Financial Information. Adapted from the International Sustainability Standards Board's (ISSB) framework, the ASRS proposes a phased approach customised to align with the local economic context and incorporating feedback from Australian industry. ? Building upon ISSB's sustainability standards released in June 2023, the AASB's Exposure Draft, released in October this year, features a narrowed focus on climate-related issues, including a requirement for climate scenario assessments, and extends applicability to a wider range of organisations including not-for-profit entities. ? The AASB's proposals extend to requirements for detailed greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions disclosures, utilising National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme methodologies, and introducing considerations for both location-based and market-based Scope 2 GHG emissions. In addition to Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, Scope 3 emissions also have to reported, in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard. ? The progressive implementation of compulsory climate-related reporting is scheduled from July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2027. This timeline follows the release of a final 'Position Paper' by the Treasury in early 2024, preceding the introduction of climate reporting legislation to Parliament. ? The forthcoming standards are closely aligned with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), positioning ASRS as a comprehensive framework for climate-related financial disclosures. The new standards will incorporate the 11 TCFD recommendations but also introduce additional disclosures. Entities will be obligated to assess climate-related risks and opportunities, spanning both physical risks like increased natural disasters and transition risks associated with a move toward a lower-carbon economy. ? As the Australian financial reporting landscape undergoes significant changes, it is imperative for organisations to adopt a proactive approach and familiarise themselves with key issues, assess their exposure, and establish credible transition plans and resilience strategies. ? Whether you’re an ASX listed company, or an SME providing goods and services to those companies, 100% Renewables is well placed to assist in building capacity needed to effectively navigate this transformation.
The SBTi Buildings Guidance Draft for Pilot Testing
On 21 November, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) launched the Buildings Science-Based Target-Setting Guidance and Tool Drafts for Pilot Testing. With the buildings sector accounting for approximately a third of global annual greenhouse gas emissions, this initiative represents a significant stride in aligning green building standards with a 1.5°C trajectory for operational carbon, operational energy, and embodied carbon. The draft guidance aims to provide businesses and financial institutions in the sector with robust, clear, and practical resources. Read more about the Pilot Testing project here.
