Net Zero News - Issue 32

The global shift towards net zero emissions will not only hold significant environmental benefits but could also help to drive diversification and innovation across the energy supply chain.

As governments and energy operators commission a growing number of energy transition projects, from solar farms to wind turbines, hydrogen and carbon capture, the ripple effect on the supply chain will be significant. Where countries such as the UK move away from traditional fossil fuel energy production methods, this provides an opportunity for the supply chain to reposition their businesses and change their service offering to meet new market demands.

The positive financial impact from delivering net zero is already proving beneficial, accounting for £83 billion to the UK’s economy last year according to the latest analysis. It represents a 10% growth, which the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) says equates to 951,000 full time jobs. This sector growth and increased job opportunities reaches across the energy supply chain.

The role of the supply chain in achieving net zero

Supply chains are complex, encompassing everything from product design to the delivery of raw materials, components, auxiliary equipment and technology. For supply chain businesses that focus on areas such as manufacturing and fabrication, new skills may be needed to transition production capability to a new sector. Whereas technology providers may be able to identify new applications where their specialised technology could be adapted.

Considering the wide-reaching requirements to support net zero energy transition projects across the UK and globe, opportunities will also be available for suppliers to move into new geographical territories and emerging energy production methods.

However net zero is achieved, the supply chain will play a crucial role.

Diversifying to benefit from net zero

Investing in time to understand how your business could diversify to attract new business in net zero energy production methods, could help to reshape the future growth of your business. Creating new revenue streams and new clients, whilst providing the opportunity for your workforce to learn new skills and expertise.

Networking is a great way of building new business connections, whilst learning more about the needs of energy and engineering companies as they plan their net zero projects. Organisations such as NOF, provide a busy events calendar to connect key companies with suppliers, as well as facilitating industry introductions for businesses which can be advantageous when looking to diversify. Whilst the Energy Industries Council (EIC) provides industry insight and market intelligence for suppliers interested in working more closely within energy sectors such as renewables and carbon capture.

Collaborating to meet supply chain challenges

Net Zero initiatives often require a multi-stakeholder approach, bringing together governments, energy operators and suppliers. For supply chain businesses, this creates vast opportunities for collaboration and partnership, leading to synergies that can spur innovation and open new markets. These collaborations can also lead to knowledge sharing and the pooling of resources, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of sustainability efforts.

Driving innovation and technology advancement

The push towards net zero necessitates innovation, particularly in the fields of energy efficiency, storage solutions, and low-carbon technologies. Supply chain businesses that invest in research and development in these areas could not only enhance their service offerings but also position themselves competitively within the market.

Investment in technology developments can also be a great way to benefit from the energy transition, looking for innovative ways to improve processes and drive efficiencies. As well as exploring technological advances such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to streamline operations. A considerable focus will also be needed on system resilience and security, as new energy production technology will need to be robust and protected from cyber security threats.

Funding net zero diversification plans

Many governments worldwide are offering financial incentives for businesses that contribute to the net zero transition, from grants to subsidised loans. Leveraging these financial supports can provide a vital lifeline for energy supply chain businesses, reducing the cost of diversifying their businesses. Furthermore, these incentives make it more viable to invest in long-term sustainability projects that might otherwise be financially daunting.

Meeting the recruitment needs of the supply chain

To meet the significant objectives that net zero brings, it's clear that suppliers will need to invest in new hires to meet future demand. Whether that’s to bring new expertise into the business, or scale up production capability, new recruitment solutions will need to be devised to ensure workforce strategies can keep up with the order book and sales strategy of businesses.
