The key to the energy transition is transferable skills

NRL has been playing a key role in delivering adaptable and skilled workforces to meet the challenges of the energy sector for over four decades now – so energy transition isn’t new to us. From British nuclear power in its dominant years, to the introduction of renewable energy alternatives such as offshore wind power.

Working across the supply chain and across the globe, we've been at the forefront of ensuring energy and engineering companies have the right talent to bring their projects to life and help their industries thrive.

The net zero energy transition

Over the years, the energy sector has undergone seismic shifts, transitioning away from conventional fossil fuel-dependent power to cleaner energy generation.

The ongoing efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions has become an international imperative, accelerating new opportunities in sectors such as wind power, hydrogen, energy from waste, and carbon capture.

Finding the people to support the energy transition

The challenge these energy and engineering companies face is finding the right people where a new power generation method doesn't provide a large number of directly qualified candidates. Addressing this, NRL is helping clients identify and nurture workers with transferable skills and expertise to thrive in these emerging sectors.

Transferable skills are those capabilities that are relevant across different roles, sectors and industries. These could vary from soft skills such as teamwork and problem-solving abilities, to more technical ones like proficient project management or deep understanding of energy systems. By identifying these in existing employees, our teams of talented recruiters allow companies to future-proof their workforce to realise energy transition plans.

For example, a petroleum engineer with their detailed understanding of subsurface geology and seismic interpretation makes for an ideal candidate for the growing sector of carbon capture and storage. Similarly, an experienced electrician with their adaptability and proficiency in power transmission systems can easily transition into the wind power sector. Recognising such skills crossover possibilities has been instrumental in reskilling the workforce to be future-ready.

It's a topic that NRL's Woking Divisional Manager Andy Williams, is extremely passionate about, and in a recent LinkedIn article he talked about how transferable skills can open new doors for candidates.

"They become incredibly valuable tools when looking for a change of career", he says.
"There are a number of emerging sectors that are constantly on the lookout for candidates with transferable skillsets, such as the renewables or energy from waste industries. Employers in these markets have been facing an ongoing skills shortage over recent years, but this provides a great opportunity for individuals with transferable engineering skills to enter a growing industry.

Creating the right energy transition workforce strategy

Whether an organisation is looking to transfer skills from a complementary engineering sector or are keen to create opportunities to diversify their workforce through inclusion initiatives and training programmes to bring in new talent, our Recruitment teams are always happy to start a conversation and share their expertise.
