The urgency for the need to decarbonize the transportation system in the U.S. is significant.??

In March of 2023 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in their Sixth Report (Synthesis of Sixth Assessment) “delivered a “final warning” on the climate crisis, as rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions push the world to the brink of irrevocable damage that only swift and drastic action can avert”. (The Guardian, March 2023)?

Comstock Fuels shares the systemic goal of policy leaders and fuel industry leaders to #decarbonize the U.S. transportation system and as a team, we work every day to accelerate the rate of that #decarbonization. Here's a snapshot of what that system we are working to decarbonize looks like:?

  • The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that U.S. transportation resulted in a net production of 1.466 billion tons of CO2 emissions.?This is 29% of the U.S. total GHG emission profile. ??
  • Under the Renewable Fuel Standard incentive program, 4 billion gallons of U.S. biodiesel, renewable diesel, and other biofuels were produced and an average of 15 billion gallons of ethanol. ??
  • 8.5% of the more than 220 million cars and trucks on the road were hybrid electric or all electric, with all electric representing less than 2%.??
  • Comstock Fuels calculates an estimated 3% GHG reductions from the current biofuel production and a 1% GHG reduction from the hybrids and EV's. ?In all less than 5% GHG has been achieved.?

Clearly, more advanced fuels – Net-Zero or below zero fuels - are needed and at significantly greater volumes to achieve systemic decarbonization of transportation in the U.S.??

Dying and decayed forestry slash and tree stands are extreme fire risks, increase carbon emissions, and present a high-value feedstock resource (hundreds of millions of tons annually) for the production of high-yield, efficient Net-Zero fuels when processed using Comstock Fuels' cellulosic technology. Got license? Comstock Fuels, 2023.
The solution: It’s the feedstock. Woody biomass has the power to deliver 50% or more of the emission reductions from this current transportation system by 2050.

Let’s look at this through nature’s lens and understand wood and why it offers the singularly most powerful feedstock solution in the history of renewable fuel development in the United States, when processed using Comstock Fuels’ patented cellulosic fuels processing solution. ?

The Power of Wood Unlocked by?Comstock’s Solution?

The Earth is comprised of 80% organic matter where its carbon system is the basis of all life on the planet, including human life. Nature created a powerful carbon processing system in cellulosic vegetation – in wood especially including from soil, roots, limbs and branches of trees and shrubs – thousands of varieties all over the world.??

All?wood is formed from the same five chemical substances: cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, ash-forming minerals, and “extractive" chemicals. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignins account for 97% of all wood.?

#Cellulose and #hemicellulose are what make up the wood's cell walls, and lignin acts like a glue holding the cells together. #Lignin especially is a complex organic polymer (the “armor”) and provides rigidity and resistance against microbial attack and other environmental stresses that trees and shrubs experience. Nature’s protection shield. ?

Lignin's complexity and its historical interpenetration with cellulose is what made its separation from cellulose challenging in the past.

This is what Comstock Fuels’ team solved for in our #patented pulping and separation process with thousands of hours of demonstration run time operationally. ?

There is over 500 million tonnes of waste wood generated every year in the U.S.: it is plentiful, available, consistent, and best converted sustainably (highest value) into valuable cellulosic biointermediates from Net-Zero and below zero carbon cellulosic processing technology from Comstock Fuels. Comstock Fuels, 2023.

Why Wood??

Understanding the constituent properties of wood and its respective carbon consuming and producing systems helps illuminate why wood is the best alternative fuel producers have today to achieve Net-Zero or below zero fuel efficiency while doubling their production output yields.?

Plentiful feedstock and efficiency... ?

Shrubs and short rotation trees and available waste wood from industrial processes make up the #cellulosicfeedstock inventory that Comstock Fuels’ technological breakthroughs enable, which?also can promote decoupling the use of food crops such as corn and soybeans from renewable fuel production. ?

With 500 million tonnes of waste woody biomass generated annually and available for use today and more than 700 million tonnes of new woody biomass that can be economically produced by growing?and sustainably harvesting?short rotation shrubs and trees, nothing else comes close to wood for the efficiency and yield, when using Comstock’s patented process. ?

Output production #yields and processing efficiency are so much higher and #carbonintensity is so much lower with wood than food crop #feedstocks when using Comstock’s patented process.?

A poplar farm: helps ecosystems thrive, removes more carbon from the atmosphere, and is a part of the emerging bioeconomy vision for Net-Zero fuel farms. Enabled by Comstock Fuels, 2023.

Comstock’s Process?

Comstock Fuel’s efficient process converts one tonne of woody biomass into TWO #biointermediates. We efficiently pulp and separate the three basic components of wood (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) and produce C6 sugar (used to create products like #ethanol, #gasoline and SAF) AND Bioleum??, a unique blend of hydrocarbons suitable for downstream hydrotreating (#SAF, #diesel), delivering high output yields (nearly double per tonne of wood as compared to existing technologies), using much less energy to produce, and delivering a much lower carbon intensity than food crops.??

Our patented process makes it economically feasible and environmentally preferable for industrial producers of waste wood, farmers, forest managers, government policy leaders, fuel producers, and fuel consumers to work together to unlock and enable nature to be at its best, to put the carbon that modern life creates, back in balance with nature.??

At Comstock Fuels we believe forests should have balanced carbon systems. Comstock Fuels, 2023.

Less “genie back in the bottle”, more systemic change that removes uncertainty, imbalance, and climate risk from the balance sheets of carbon in nature and the commerce of transportation in ways where everyone wins.?

It is in the feedstock?and in nature where we found the answers, hidden in plain sight.?
