Nestlé To Test New Satellite Technology For Reforestation Projects

Food giant?Nestlé?has?announced?that it is commencing a pilot for Airbus's new Pléiades Neo satellites to monitor its reforestation efforts. Nestlé will use the high-resolution images generated by this technology to ensure that the trees it has planted in sourcing regions continue to thrive over the long term. The initiative will help the company gain a clearer understanding of the amount of carbon it has removed from the atmosphere through its Global Reforestation Programme – a part of its 2050 net zero emissions ambition.

Sales growth at?French?retailer?Groupe Casino?slowed in the first quarter,?the company said, dragged down by its supermarkets and hypermarkets in its core French market. Casino, which also controls Brazil's?Grupo Pao de Acucar, posted first-quarter sales of €5.436 billion. On a same-store basis and excluding acquisitions, currency effects and revenue on fuel, sales rose by 1.0% in the first quarter compared to a 4.4% increase in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Online?supermarket group?Picnic, which has a presence in the?Netherlands,?Germany?and?France, has launched a new range of 2,000?private-label?SKUs, which forms part of its mission to 'democratise online grocery shopping', it said in a statement. The group has worked alongside UK-based strategic design consultancy?big fish?for the last two years on the development of its multi-tier range, aiming to develop products that 'look good in their homes, instead of fighting for attention on the supermarket shelf', it added.
The?John Lewis Partnership, which owns and operates?Waitrose & Partners, has?announced?that it is selling wine bottles without the familiar plastic and foil sleeves around the neck of the bottles. The removal of the sleeves, which the retailer says is a first among supermarkets in the?United Kingdom, is being trialled on Waitrose’s own-brand Loved & Found?wine?range of lesser known grape varieties and wine regions. Initially four bottles will be sold without neck sleeves, which are officially known as ‘capsules’, and by the end of the year the packaging will be removed from the full range of ten Loved & Found wines, as part of Waitrose’s plans to reduce unnecessary?packaging.
Dunnes Stores?has maintained its position as?Ireland's leading supermarket chain, holding 23.2% of the market according to the latest share data from?Kantar, covering the 12-week period to 16 April. Tesco, in second place, holds 22.4% of the market, according to Kantar, followed by?SuperValu, on 20.7%,?Lidl, on 13.3%, and?Aldi, on 12.1% market share.
