The Nesting Place
As winter approaches I have been observing a bird's nest tucked into a crevice in branches of a pine oak tree. One day I examined it and found that it was beautifully and intricately woven of the smallest bits of straw and twigs. As I began to realize what a masterpiece of craftsmanship it was, I found myself holding it almost reverently.
My thoughts ranged far and wide as I studied this remarkable mud nest. I thought of the enormous amount of time and devotion it took to weave it. The nest had endured the summer heat and the ice and snows of winter along with the biting wind of Texas. Now it seemed to await the return of its occupants.
I quietly remembered soon is Lenten season. I wondered whether we are bringing the right materials with which to structure our spiritual lives and if we are bringing the same degree of diligence and commitment to the building of beautiful experiences of life that those feathered friends had brought to their nesting place.
It is always timely for us to take quiet inventory to see what we are bringing to life. Are the materials that we weave into the days of our years the ones that will reinforce us for winter's cruel winds and summer's violent storms? We do not have a great deal of time left to us. Now is the time each of us must search to determine the quality of the materials we are using to shape the eternal nesting place of our lives.
