So you've done the hard work, you've impressed the right people and you have received an offer for a dream opportunity.
And now you have to show what you can do.
No pressure, right?
So can an AI chatbot help you navigate the period between now and when you start your new job?
Can it help you prepare as effectively as possible?
The Prompt
What you need to consider here is what might work best for you.
Do you want the process to emulate a discussion with an onboarding coach that guides you directly step by step? Or do you prefer to go through the process yourself?
I elected to go the route of getting an overview of things to consider and actions to take and this is the prompt that started the conversation:
Ok - will you please assume the role of a professional career coach that specializes in helping people successfully onboard to a new position.
I want you to help me follow a step by step process to help me ease my nerves, ask the right questions and then prepare adequately for the first day on the job.
Can you help with that? If yes - will you please first provide me with an outline of the steps you will guide me through from now until day 1 of the new job?
The Review
The Chatbot provided me with a 6-Step process, starting from understanding my role in the company to strategies for day 1 and beyond.
But - important to remember that the Chatbot did not review and check the response before sharing it with me. That's just now how the technology works.
It is therefore important to always have it review the response and improve as necessary. And to do that, this is the prompt I used:
Ok this seems well considered, but let's review the outline provided and consider if anything is missing. If yes, please re-write the outline including any missing pieces.
Remember, you can make the review prompt more specific if you want to specifically highlight certain topics or elements.
The Response
The new response was indeed an improvement and provided a more detailed process to prepare for the new job.
Now having this outline is great, but to make it actionable I needed a task list to manage and I entered this prompt:
Excellent - now please can you prepare a task list, in table format with checkboxes to show completion, of the key activities that should be actioned. Ensure the tasks are in the right chronological order please.
Which provided a handy little table with checkboxes.
Now one can either copy that to Excel or Sheets or simply keep it in the chat, asking the bot to mark off the items that have been completed as you get to them.
