Neptune UX Summit 2018 – Key Takeaways

Time flies. Just 30 months after the release of Neptune UX Platform we witnessed the official release of its successor Neptune DX Platform at the Neptune UX Summit 2018 in Oslo. Let’s take a moment to look back at the highlights of this great international event.

From now on it’s all the Planets

In the keynote, CEO Andreas Grydeland-Sulejewski and the technical leadership announced the release of Neptune 5.0 as one module of the new Neptune DX Platform. Co-Founders Ole-André Haugen and Nj?l Stabell then took us on a cosmic journey from Planet 8 (former Neptune UXP) to Planet 9, the new and second module of our fully rebranded core product. The new platform no longer relies on the SAP ABAP stack only but thanks to node.js based Planet 9 opens the Neptune market to potentially any enterprise of the solar system.

Focus on Enterprise Integration

On Planet Neptune we put our customers and partners in the spotlight. And they amazed us once again with great presentations painting a clear picture of the current enterprise challenges. No matter which speaker you were following, harmonizing your digital assets across the enterprise is today’s path to success. Don Cleak from Eastman Chemicals motivated the audience not only to stand up during his presentation but also to master scaling of enterprise mobility step by step based on a clear SAP Fiori strategy. The head of innovation of a US Fortune 500 pharma giant stressed that the key pillars of digital transformation for them are not only UX and IoT but just as well bots, augmented reality, voice recognition (AI) and blockchain technology. He explained the strategic decision of Neptune DX Platform as their core platform to integrate those key pillars and strategic IT lead Dr. Andreas Schliemann from WVV Germany pointed out in his demo the heavy impact of Neptune Software on their path from SAP mobility to digitization of cross-system business processes.

Is this still UI5?!

Was the main question when Dev Specialist Kay Schmickler conquered the stage to present Birkenstock’s mobile order app. Everyone was astonished by the mobile-first web shop solution that enables Birkenstock’s sales force to order and pre-order products with or without connection directly at the store. ‘We crashed older iPad generations’ Mr. Schmickler laughed on stage ‘because we are storing thousands of product images offline on the Apple device together with pricing and stock availability data.’ While the performance of the app is outstanding, Fiori experts were also shocked by the flawless corporate identity of the mobile launchpad, which looks just like a consumer-grade Birkenstock web shop and does not resemble the typical UI5 app.

Neptune Software invades REST APIs

But what does all this mean for developers? That’s the question Den Howlett is raising in his blog post following the Neptune UX Summit. ‘customers are telling it [Neptune] that the world is a lot bigger than it once was. That’s a good thing.’ In his classic style, Den examines our new API anywhere offering and raises important points which customers and platform-vendors must tackle as partners moving towards a fully digitized enterprise.
