Nepal's Ride-Hailing Companies Operating Illegally, says the Government Audit Report
A recent audit report by the Auditor General of Nepal has made some interesting observations about the ride-hailing companies in Nepal. The report has alleged that these companies are operating without necessary licenses and operating illegally, and they have not been registered with the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) as required by law. The audit report recommends that the government take action to ensure that ride-hailing companies comply with the law.?
The Motor Vehicles and Transportation Act, 2049 prohibits any private motor vehicles to be used as public transportation. It has also raised concerns over the operation of services by offshore companies like InDrive without registering in Nepal.?The report further observed that the government has failed to address the issues regarding the ride hailing companies. Nepal's Post-Covid Economic Recovery is Stumbling
Nepal's economic growth had rebounded in the last fiscal year, but recent data shows a decline in key indicators such as remittance inflows, tax revenue, and exports. This is attributed to various factors such as political instability and a lack of investment in critical sectors.
The unstable political environment in Nepal has hindered the government's ability to implement effective policies and initiatives to stimulate economic growth. Nepal's economy has been declining for some time, despite efforts by the previous and current government to revive it. The government is struggling to generate enough revenue to cover its expenses and risks falling into a debt trap by taking out large loans with conditions. There are concerns that Nepal could be greylisted by the FATF, a global anti-money laundering watchdog, which would further harm the country's growth prospects.

The government should prioritize accepting grants rather than loans, to avoid falling into a debt trap.
