NeoCon 2024: A Hub of Innovation and Inspiration

NeoCon 2024 has once again proven to be a cornerstone event in the world of interior design, offering a plethora of insights and inspiration.

We attended this year’s event and returned to our offices with fresh ideas and observations. Here are the top takeaways that are sure to influence our future projects:

The Power of Color

NeoCon 2024 was a celebration of color. From sophisticated, neutral palettes inspired by fashion icons like George Clooney to bold, statement-making hues, color was at the forefront.

Bernhardt Design showcased a range of sophisticated, sleek, and modern designs with a neutral palette that exuded a sense of calm and cleanliness. Momentum Textiles embraced bold colors, demonstrating how vibrant hues can invigorate a space.

Skyline Glass introduced a coral palette, while other showrooms, like those showcasing the “Falling Water” palette, featured earthy, deeper tones. Haworth emphasized using color to shape human experiences, highlighting how colors influence mood, energy, and overall well-being.

Inclusive and Flexible Spaces

Inclusivity and flexibility were key themes, with a strong focus on creating environments that cater to diverse needs and preferences.

Significant research focused on supporting various learning and working styles with design solutions that offer flexibility and choice. From sofas in private offices to height-adjustable tables, furniture designs are becoming more adaptable to different needs.

Many exhibitors highlighted the importance of acoustics, offering areas for private calls and quiet work, which is increasingly important in today’s integrated lifestyle-work environments. Examples like fold-down chairs and benches on the sides of conference rooms show a trend towards multifunctional, user-friendly furniture.

Sustainability in Design

Sustainability continues to be a driving force in design innovation, with many manufacturers committing to eco-friendly practices.

Manufacturers are phasing out PFAS and opting for sustainable alternatives like Shaw Contract’s PVC-free, fully recyclable EcoWorx Resilient. Creative uses of recycled materials were displayed, such as Allsteel’s chair made from recycled kayaks and Teknion’s chair from ocean litter.

Steelcase and Mannington were among the companies that impressed us by committing to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Integration and Innovation

Innovative integration of technology and design was a standout theme. Herman Miller showcased BIFMA testing methods, underscoring the importance of durability and quality. BIFMA is a not‐for-profit trade association for business and institutional furniture manufacturers.

OFS and Watson introduced integrated planters and waste receptacles, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. B+N’s mobile power strips exemplify how flexibility and connectivity are becoming central to modern office design.

Embracing Organic Design

Organic shapes and materials were prevalent, creating inviting and harmonious environments.

Furniture with soft curves, like those from OFS, are designed to welcome employees back to the office. There was a strong emphasis on wellness, with spaces dedicated to rest and rejuvenation, featuring elements like nesting tables and benches.

Acoustic materials with patterns emulating marble and woodgrains from TURF and Skyline and round glass-blown tables from Bernhardt Design highlighted the trend towards natural aesthetics.
