Nenikēkamen- We have won! Run for your Health & Wellness!!!
Nenikēkamen, (we have won!)
Legend has it that, Philippides (or Pheidippides) was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), which took place in August or September, 490 BC. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming “nenikēkamen, (we have won!)", before collapsing and dying.
The account of the run from Marathon to Athens first appears in Plutarch's On the Glory of Athens in the 1st century AD, which quotes from Heraclides Ponticus's lost work, giving the runner's name as either Thersipus of Erchius or Eucles.
Recreational running has dual benefits -- it rejuvenates the mind and recharges the body. Many people find running a therapy where they can push back negative emotions, get time to reflect, de-stress, plan ahead and enjoy their own company.
Running reduces anxiety : Anxiety is the most common mental illness millions of adults suffer from it. Whether you've dealt with mild or severe anxiety, you probably know that it doesn't make you the most confident version of yourself.
That's where running comes in. According to research, exercise creates new brain cells and an overall pattern of calm in areas of the brain.
Ready to lace up your sneakers yet?
2. There's a significant link between goal-setting and confidence: Research proves that setting and attaining ambitious goals has an impact on happiness levels, therefore raising your confidence.
3. Running boosts your mood after a very short period of time: No, you don't have to run for three hours every day to feel its effects on your mental health. As anyone who has ever turned to running as a way to release stress can attest to, there's an improvement in overall mood very quickly.
Happy people are generally more confident—and vice versa.
4. Physical activity and self-esteem are linked from an early age: It's no secret that the toned look that comes from running can raise confidence levels. Research found that exercise improves self-esteem across the board, particularly for people who are at a high risk of becoming overweight.
5. Running improves your memory: A study done at the University of British Columbia found that regular exercise is excellent for cognitive function. Not only does aerobic exercise protect the aging brain, but it improves thinking skills. Whether or not you're worried about preserving your memory just yet, having strong thinking skills in the short term is certainly imperative to confidence.
6. Running helps you sleep: It's really hard to be the best, most confident version of yourself when you're not getting enough sleep and are walking around like a zombie with bags under your eyes. One study found that people who get 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week had a 65 percent improvement in sleep quality and felt more alert during the day.
7. Outdoor exercise improves self-esteem: Unlike many forms of exercise, running is typically done outside. Which is great news for your confidence, because research shows that exercising in green spaces results in lowered blood pressure and increased self-esteem.
The treadmill is great and all, but if you have the option to take your workout outside, make it happen. What are you waiting for? Slip on those sneakers and hit the pavement.
The lifestyles of people in the workforce are important both for the sake of their own health and for the sake of their employer's productivity. Companies often subsidize these programs in the hope that they will save companies money in the long run by improving health, morale and productivity. Non-controversial examples of workplace wellness organizational policies include allowing flex-time for exercise, providing on-site kitchen and eating areas, offering healthy food options in vending machines, holding "walk and talk" meetings, and offering financial and other incentives for participation. In recent years, workplace wellness has been expanded its ambit to create a more overall healthy environment . This expansion is largely been in part to creating greater access and leadership support from leaders in the participating companies.
