Neil Montanus featured in Adirondack Life Magazine this month at 90
So excited to get my copy of Adirondack Life Magazine today and see this! It warms my heart to see my Dad still getting recognition for his work. He's going to be 90 in March and I'm going to throw him a huge birthday party and photo exhibition in our gallery. Hope you can make it!
He was my role model and hero - and still is today. He patiently taught me everything I know about photography.
The story reads:
"In 1966 at Grand Central Station, millions saw the Adirondacks like never before. To the commuters scuttling through one of Manhattan's busiest hubs, the vision of autumn serenity on an Adirondack Lake must have been a welcome sight. Though the 60-by-18 foot backlit transparency was meant to promote Kodak film - one of hundreds of Coloramas displayed in Grand Central Station between 1950 and 1990 - it surely inspired a number of Adirondack vacations as well.
The image was shot by Neil Montanus and Lee Howick with an eight-by-20 inch view camera. The Rochester-based photographers searched Lake Placid by floatplane to find the ideal setting. "I rolled up my pants and waded out into the water to scout out the perfect angle and then took the huge camera and tripod combo out into the lake," recalls Montanus. Now 89, his globe-trotting career is behind him, though his son, Jim, carries on the family business. See more Coloramas at www.montanusphotography.com.
