Neil Bogart Speaks on a panel about “Food Safety – The Golden Years?” at the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology 2017 Convention
The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST), celebrates its 50th year in promoting the advancement of food safety and technology in Australia amongst its Food Scientists, is looking at the past, current and towards the future in the food industry at its 2017 annual conference in Sydney.
I was honored to be invited, through the International Association for Food Protections (IAFP) – guest speaker program, to speak on the science panel “Food Safety – The Golden Years?” to a packed room of peers. The panel consisted of four speakers from collegiate, industry, and regulatory. The panel looked at food safety from the development of the principals of HACCP through current technology of DNA testing for bacterial detection.
My talk, “From Artillery Shells to HACCP Development and Today” covered the development of the HACCP principals, FMEA, which were developed during WWII and how to use them, the development of HACCP, and the issues that are believed to be causing the current amount of recalls - - the lack of proper training on Hazard Analysis in the implementation of HACCP and Senior Management commitment.
The other speakers covered salmonella, covering outbreaks in Australia and trying to reduce the amount of incidences, and the Gene-Up PCR system from bioMerieux.
I want to thank the following - - Dr. Duncan Craig with the Australian Association for Food protection, AAFP, for the invitation to speak at AIFST 2017, The International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) – guest speakers program for covering the travel expenses to Australia, and Georgie Aley and her staff at The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology for the local logistics and housing.
