CORE POWER TARGETS $10 BILLION ORDER BOOK FOR NUCLEAR SHIPPING BY 2030
UK-based start-up Core Power CEO Mikal B?e told a press conference that the company is expecting to see its first orders for vessels equipped with nuclear reactors before 2030. This includes both floating NPPs (FNPPs) and nuclear-powered ships.
“The formation of the first order book starts in 2028-29,” B?e told Ship & Bunker at the event. “Our aim is to build a $10bn order book by 2030, and the first deliveries would then be in 2030-35 — we’re not quite sure, but I’d say probably in the latter end of that bucket.”
NEW ENGINEERING ALLIANCE TO SUPPORT EDF AT HINKLEY POINT C
The new Alliance of engineering companies that will support EDF EPR Engineering in delivering the Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C NPPs in the UK. Partners include Assystem, AtkinsRealis, Jacobs and Vulcain Engineering.
Assystem said the Alliance has been created to orchestrate collaboration between the four key partners and EDF EPR Engineering, with the aim of delivering exceptional value, through enhanced efficiency, investment, and collaboration.
TOSHIBA AND POLISH FIRMS SIGN MOU FOR POLAND’S FIRST NUCLEAR PLANT
Japan’s Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS) and its affiliate, Toshiba International (Europe) Ltd (TIL), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Poland’s Rockfin and EthosEnergy to explore collaboration in equipment supply and maintenance services for Poland’s first NPP. Rockfin is a manufacturer of auxiliary equipment for steam turbines and generators (STGs), and EthosEnergy Poland a provider of maintenance services.
The Polish authorities intend to build six nuclear power units within 20 years. Starting in 2033, it is planned to start launching power units with a capacity of 1-1.6 GWe every two to three years to generate from 6-9 GWe. The aim is for the first unit to begin operation in 2033.
EDF ACQUIRES GE STEAM POWER’S NUCLEAR ACTIVITIES
EDF has completed acquisition of GE Vernova’s steam nuclear activities covering conventional island equipment for NPPs excluding servicing activities in the Americas. This follows the exclusivity agreement signed between EDF and GE in February 2022, the final agreement signed in November 2022, and fulfilment of all required conditions.
GE Vernova said it “retains its nuclear services business in the Americas to drive its simpler, focused Steam Power business, as well as its GE Vernova-Hitachi nuclear business providing fuels, services and reactors, including BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) technology”. It also retains GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, a leading lifecycle provider for reactor islands, global nuclear fuels, and services, which is working to deploy commercial, grid-scale SMR technologies.

ENEC TO CO-OPERATE WITH KEPCO AND CNNC
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Korea Electric Power Cooperation (Kepco) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to bolster research and investment opportunities in nuclear energy in emerging countries.
The MOU was signed at a ceremony in Seoul by ENEC Managing Director & CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi and Kepco President & CEO Dong-Cheol Kim. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed AL Nahyan attended the ceremony.
NEW PRESIDENT OF CNEA REVEALS PLANS FOR NUCLEAR DEVELOPMENT IN ARGENTINA
Germán Guido Lavalle the new president of the Argentina’s National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA – Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica) discussed Argentina’s nuclear development plans. Lavalle, who was appointed President in May, is a doctor of Nuclear Engineering graduated from the Balseiro Institute. Between 1996 and 2000 he was manager of International Relations and Technology Transfer at CNEA. Subsequently, he was rector of the Argentine University of Business and of the Technological Institute of Buenos Aires. In 2007 he founded Candoit, a company dedicated to artificial intelligence, software development and engineering consulting.
CNEA is seeking to ensure it has the necessary budget to press ahead with its three major projects – the prototype CAREM small modular reactor (SMR), the multipurpose RA-10 research reactor, and the Proton Therapy Centre.
OVERLOADING MACHINE INSTALLED AT AKKUYU 1
An overloading machine, used for maintenance and repair of the reactor compartment, has been installed at unit 1 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Türkiye. The overloading machine, consisting of a bridge with a mobile trolley and a working rod, is used to move the fuel assemblies inside the reactor compartment. This process is necessary to replace used fuel with fresh fuel. The machine, weighing 31.6 tonnes, ensures the accuracy and safety of this operation: with a permissible error in performing operations is not more than 2mm.
Akkuyu, Türkiye’s first NPP, will eventually host four Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors. The pouring of first concrete for unit 1 took place in April 2018, for unit 2 in June 2020, for unit 3 in March 2021, and for unit 4 in July 2022. Rosatom is constructing the reactors according to a build-own-operate model.
TEPCO COMPLETES DISCHARGE OF SIXTH BATCH OF TREATED WATER FROM FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NPP
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) has completed the sixth discharge of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP site.
The tritium concentration in this sixth batch water treated with the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), which removes most of the radioactive contamination, with the exception of tritium, is far below Japan’s operational limit, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have confirmed.
