Nehemiah: The Power and Purpose of Structure
As we enter into Nehemiah chapter 3 we are given a breakdown of who worked where on the wall. Many lessons on structuring workload can be ascertained from Nehemiah's example here.
First, Look at the systematic approach to the order and location. There is an undeniable thoroughness to the list. No section of the wall is missed all the way around the city. Thoroughness in our structure and design gives stability and confidence when challenges come. A tremendous lesson for a tumultuous world when working. Next, there is a sense of accomplishment as everyday the builders could view there specific section of the wall and see their progress. It is extremely valuable to let people see the progress of their labors... especially on larger undertakings. Discouragement sets in fast when it appears nothing is being accomplished. By sectioning the wall into specific groups everyone could see there own progress daily, keeping morale high. Then, we see a sense of ownership in the teams. Everyone built THEIR section of the wall. The value of employee buy-in can never be downplayed. An employee who believes in the vision of a company is an unstoppable force for good in the company's objectives. The structure also provides an easier management as their is accountability established. Accountability is the manager's friend. Accountable employees are productive employees. Finally, we see a focus. Everyone worked on the wall as one. The goal was singular - build the wall. Focus is a tool for efficiency and productivity in any business.
