Great podcast with Andy Luttrell! It made me think. You talked about the situation where someone agrees to do the right thing, but does so for the wrong reason. I thought perhaps you both seemed to wonder why that makes us uncomfortable. The feeling of not being as drawn to a person when they do the right thing for the wrong reason has a reasonable basis. It is a step forward to do the right thing, but it leaves reality precarious when it is done for the wrong reason. Rationality could be said to consist in trusting what is trustworthy and not trusting what is untrustworthy. Virtue is trustworthy. Viciousness is not. We cannot get to the land of promise in one step. So we keep taking step after step in the right direction. If we do so, then in time, we can go a long way. But viciousness threatens to undermine the whole project. What if democracy disappears and the new authoritarians unleash genocide against us? What if our unwillingness to consider existential crises lets those crises happen? Irrationality and unfriendliness are untrustworthy. Rationality in service to friendliness toward all is trustworthy. ??? Live long and prosper my friend! ?? https://www.quora.com/profile/Bryer-Sophia-Gardener-William-Johnson/answers
