The Neglected 17 million people in SA, a “Time Bomb”

Today I felt very emotional and wrote this article because of what I experienced this week (23/03/2018). In the journey of my PhD, I am studying the social economy and social enterprises. These consists of the cooperatives, informal businesses, NGO’s and even the church. I got so emotional when I discovered the level of ignorance of our people when it comes to technology and social media. We sent out 500 text messages to Spaza shop owners to complete a simple google form that requires name, surname, id, address and gender. We only received 50 back; they do not know how to complete this form. They do not have cell phones to that could do this, they prefer the phone with keyboard buttons rather than the touch screen, they don’t know what is this link that thy need to click.

After listening to these stories, I just felt a lump in my throat. I asked myself this question, could we all claim to have democracy when our people are still lacking behind in such a manner. How are they going to go online and check the voter details, access information about various parties, keep up with social media to get to know politicians better since the mainstream media is very biased towards negatives stories that pays their bills. So that is why we are taking action can you join us at the Enactus University of Johannesburg? By teaching three people how to open an email account, create a twitter account and Facebook page you can empower someone to become an informed voter and boost their self esteem. Join our each one teach campaign, when you are done teaching them click on this link and complete the google form you could win Samsung products like smart phones, tablets and laptop which will be announced at UJ on Mandela day, 18 July 2018.
