NEGLECT BASIC TEACHING AT THE CHILDRENS' PERIL
Henry Gray
In retirement I have dedicated time to share my experiences with others through both writing and discourse. Others helped me in formative professional years and it is my turn to give to others.
As a long term educator, I am devastated by the suggestion that children should not be taught their tables and that phonics should be dumped from language teaching programs.
How awful. There are some things that need to be learned by heart. Instant recall is necessary. It is dreadful when students stumble over basic calculations and the correct spelling of often simple words. Basics need to be taught so they can be automatically recalled.
If students have to stop and labour over what they need to know in these foundational areas, then pity help their further learning. Deprivation in these domains is tantamount to trying to build a house without a foundation. That learning will be a house of cards and will collapse.

9 年Can't disagree Henry! Of course it is the "HOW" as well as the "WHAT" that needs to be taken into account in teaching & learning process. If the classroom environment remains highly conducive to child-centred learning and holds that appeal to attract and involve the learner then the "foundational areas" to which you refer will certainly not be neglected.
