Linkedin as a platform has the potential for some awesome networking, knowledge sharing and sharing inspiration amongst others but what hurts me most is the amount of negativity that is generated and shared here on Linkedin day on day.
And surprising part is, it is not even limited to not so successful people. There are some big, fairly successful people of the corporate world who thrive on this negativity. Every post of theirs is about social media trials of companies, their management and their work. And people seem to love it. Hundreds of likes and innumerable comments on those posts further emphasis the fact that negativity sells.
Disgruntled employees leave no stone unturned to badmouth their employers. Prospective employees accusing recruiters and companies. These recruiters in turn blaming the jobseekers. Why… Just Why?
Another big instance when you see this negativity flow is when a startup fails. Be it Snapdeal, be it Housing.com or even something like Peppertap. People leave no stone unturned to bash them up. You know what I feel, these social media bashers are mostly those fence sitters. Those people who never had the guts to enter the “High Risk, High Gain” world of startups. And when someone fails, they want to justify more to themselves rather than anyone else that they were right. And that’s when you get to hear “I had told you so” “ I always knew they will fail” “They weren’t doing it right, they should have done this” If you were so knowledgeable, then why weren’t you there.
Its not only limited to Linkedin, even if you look at Indian Television, there as well negativity sells. The saas bahu serials, the conspiring relative, the cheating partner and the list goes on.
What I would love to understand is that why has it become this way? Why is it that people enjoy and consume this negativity so easily? You post about motivational things and the engagement on this post is almost nil, you post something bad mouthing someone and everyone joins the bandwagon. Is it a way of giving vent to our own frustrations? Is it a way to prove to ourselves that we are happy and successful? Or is it just deriving happiness out of someone elses misery?
Looking forward to your comments/suggestions/views/examples below.

7 年Well written article. I absolutely agree to the fact that "unfortunately" negativity is what's selling. A typical case of that was an actually clean and positive TV serial shutting down abruptly just so that the irritatingly negative one continues to air! I wonder if there is an end to this negativity? I really wish there is. Might sound like a fantasy but I wonder where the Rams, Krishnas or the Durgas are!
