Needed! Skilled Electronics Engineers

Accelerating Knowledge Transfer in Engineering

There is a well-worn story about the retired engineer asked to fix an old machine. Having submitted an invoice for several thousand euros, he is requested to itemize his costs. A solitary euro is charged for a chalk cross. The remainder is the cost for knowing where on the machine to apply it.

While the story continues to raise a chuckle, it also causes discomfort. Unfortunately, it remains far too close to reality for many engineering businesses across the industry.

Much engineering is described in theory, with a range of equations, processes, and methodologies. But an equal amount is experience. Tacit knowledge is garnered over years thanks to countless interactions with the theory that works in practice, and that which doesn’t. The industry is littered with numerous sticky notes listing exceptions and anomalies, and all stuck to the proverbial computer screen. And that stories like this, true or not, reflect the workplace shows that more needs to be undertaken in the form of knowledge sharing and training.

Global competition for skilled workers especially in electronics

Without some concerted effort, the situation will get worse, not better. For years, engineering associations have complained about the imbalance between graduates entering the workplace and the number leaving to retire. In a report[i] ?by the Institute der deutschen Wirtschaft, iwd, they predicted that around 45,000 engineers would retire in 2022. But, despite record numbers of students starting their studies, the gap between open positions and people to fill them is only predicted to grow further.

Especially in electronics and electrical engineering the gap is growing rapidly due to retirement and an increasing demand for electro mobility and energy transition which got an additional boost due to the war of Russia against Ukraine.

In 2022 Germany universities will deliver just 8600 electronics and electrical engineers onto the job market. These is just a drop in the bucket because, according to VDE calculations, a total of just under 20,000 would probably be needed this year alone and demand is only growing.?

Many believe that management is more attractive than engineering. In a presentation to the Hans B?ckler Stiftung it is noted that an additional challenge is the focus by both employees and employers on management careers. Many students believe that their development chances are better on a management track. Employers make the situation worse, with the majority offering management career development programs, while few offer anything similar for those wanting to extend themselves as an engineer.

So, what options are available to fill these open positions? Many organizations focus on acquiring personnel, thereby concentrating on winning the war for talent, hiring from abroad, convincing employees to retire later, and hiring external consultants. However, due to the large number of engineers needed, this approach has become increasingly difficult.

An alternative approach is to continuously train and up-skill the existing workforce to enable them to not just fulfilling their existing role, but enabling them to transition new areas where personnel are needed.

Embedded Academy

Critical to this approach is the integration of e-learning, enabling employees to remain up to date in their current roles, and supporting them to transition to new tasks as the business need arises.

Embedded Academy is bringing engineers up to speed and thus supports engineers in tackling energy transition, e-mobility, and embedded development.?
