9 年I agree, having a mammogram can save lives. However, a mammogram misses over 50 to 60% of all breast cancer in women who have dense-breast tissue. For women who have "Fatty" or "Scattered" breast densities, mammography is enough of an examination but for women who have "Heterogeneously" or "Extremely" dense-breast tissue, it is not enough. These women need to also have an ultrasound exam. Why? Because on a mammogram, cancer shows up white. Cancer is easy to spot in fat. But dense-breast tissue is also white. Looking for a white cancer in white dense-breast tissue is like looking for a pearl in a glass of milk. On ultrasound, dense-breast tissue also shows up white but cancer shows up dark, making it much easier to detect when it's small and easier to treat. So, women need to ask their doctor if they have dense-breast tissue and if so, ask to have an additional ultrasound exam, preferably, an AWBUS (automated whole breast ultrasound) exam. This is a consistent safe, non-invasive exam that has no compression and no radiation. If it's safe for unborn babies, it's safe for your breasts. If you don't have AWBUS in your area then at least have a hand-held ultrasound exam. THAT is a complete breast exam for women who have DBT.

9 年I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48. My cousin was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and she was only 38. Women should start having annual mammograms around the same time start having Pap smears.
