The Need for Space in Teaching
Ask any educator what they need to support them to work better, to feel better, or to improve their wellebing, and more often than not, the answer will be more time.
?
More time however isn't possible, and I would argue, is not the answer. What is needed instead is the space for educators to work productively without interruptions, structures designed so teams can collaborate, and support to maxiimise student learning.

The Consequences of Neglecting Teacher Space?
?
Without space, we have educators working in ad-hoc, reactive ways, putting out spotfires or chasing the next thing that appears in their inbox.
?
But by embracing and implementing structured ways for educators to work, we pave the way for a more fulfilling and effective work environment.
?
Discovering the key ways to create an environment where educators can thrive - quiet spaces, clear expectations, deep initiatives, and unwavering leadership support - is what is needed to create change.

Let's empower our educators for success!

Constant interruptions are especially challenging for those with neurodivergent brains, let alone your leaders of learning trying to navigate all their admin, curriculum and behaviour management responsibilities while being constantly interrupted by casual conversations or further requests for the endless pursuit of improving student outcomes. Thanks for starting an empowering conversation by sharing your innovative ideas in the teacher wellbeing space.

2 个月This is very true and has become more obvious since working through the COVID lockdowns. As we were working from home we suddenly discovered agency in our working day - we met regularly, albeit via Zoom, with colleagues to discuss our students needs and to develop curriculum and were able to plan the important things in our day. Now we are back in school and I feel I have no agency in my day, I'm rushing to and from classes and buffeted by the demands of others. I'm fortunate to have regularly scheduled time for collaboration - although this is often taken for other purposes.

2 个月Excellent point Amy Green. When I was teaching full-time, I realised the importance of having a quiet space to think. For me, the early mornings were the perfect time to re-center myself and prepare for the day

2 个月This is so true! I specifically think about personal issues and conflicts between colleagues that hinder a collaborative working environment and take so much space as well. If we give ourselves time to process our thoughts and needs we automatically open more space for teaching as well.
