The need for Power

There is a dark side within all of us. Humans, are capable of being the best and the worst compared to all living species. The thing that overshadows our ability to do good is our superiority and the need for power. Power in literal terms is the ability to do something or act in a particular way, esp. as a faculty or quality. A famous movie ones quoted, “with great power comes great responsibility” and its the responsibility we fail to accept.

The need for power is not something we are born with, however all our lives, we are told to compete, to be better at what we do. Take for example a basic example at your own household. Our parents push us to compete with our elder sibling who may be better in education than us, or a cousin and perhaps a friend. They ask us to compete, to be better then them. They do it for our good however this is when, I believe, we are pushed towards power. Then we see the rich kids, with luxurious cars, big mansions, money, fame and we hear their success stories like they started off with nothing and we push ourselves to be them to be in control, to take control.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Power, without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” You may wonder for a thing as superior, as great as power requires the need for love. Love, a feeling that I am yet to understand, is something you feel when you want to belong. Love, however is eternal. It is a feeling that I cannot express or maybe no one is able to express in words. Love has the power to destroy you or to make you capable of doing wreck less things. It has the power to make you superior, to provide you the justice you require, to answer to all the questions that you have in all these years wished to know.

Love is also heart breaking, and makes you vulnerable. It makes you do crazy things spontaneously that you may regret later. Love is only one feeling that makes you powerful. Nowadays the word has taken a new meaning, it has been misused over the years. People take pride in having relationships and telling your partners that they are in love however its just mere attraction until you are sure that this person is something you are willing to give it all up for. Love makes you cheat, love makes you hate, love makes you strong, and it also makes you the weakest. Love has no boundaries and it rare cases it may be blind – blind in a sense that you are unable to believe that the person you are in love with can have the power to betray you. Betrayal is something absolute. With love comes betrayal. The only feeling more stronger than love is the feeling of being betrayed by the person you love. Betrayal can be of any form and it has its own path of self destruction and revenge.

Revenge can be very aggressive. It can destroy the people you once loved and in the end revenge may seem the only thing you are destined for. A show once quoted, “Destiny … To Believe That A Life Is Meant For A Single Purpose, One Must Also Believe In A Common Fate. Father To Daughter, Brother To Sister, Mother To Child, Blood Ties Can Be A Unyielding As They Are Eternal. But It Is Our Bonds Of Choice That Truly Light The Road We Travel. Love Versus Hatred, Loyalty Against Betrayal. A Person’s True Destiny Can Only Be Revealed, At The End Of His Journey.”

All of this has one ultimate path, a path you chose to take, a path of power, a path of love, a path of difficult choices, a path of creating your own destiny, a revenge against betrayal. In the end, that is all there is to define you. Thus love has the power to destroy you. To make you selfish. To ruin what pride is left in you. It is also the best feeling ever. It is the only thing that makes you belong!
