The toxicity and disengagement in an organization is a reflection of its current level of emotional intelligence. Toxic work environments occur when people use position-based power to control and manipulate others into giving away their energy. Individuals in these organizations rarely trust each other and are extremely reluctant to lower their walls around each other. These toxic relationships feed off of the drama, chaos and conflict they create.
A company’s culture is merely the way individuals behave with one another. Learning to lower your walls by refusing to give away our energy will eliminate toxic work environments. For a long time, companies have hired employees based primarily upon their IQ and experience with little or no attention paid to the person’s emotional intelligence. ?This has resulted in a wide variation in the levels of emotional intelligence among individuals within an organization.
We have all experienced the toxic effects created by individuals with low levels of emotional intelligence.?These individuals may have been hired for their IQ and experience but they often find themselves in dead end jobs, passed over for promotion or even fired for their lack of emotional intelligence.? A UC Berkeley study conducted over 40 years concluded emotional intelligence is 400% more valuable than intellectual intelligence in predicting career, personal and corporate success.
