Need To Calm The Chaos?

Need To Calm The Chaos?

2020 has reminded us that there is lot’s out of our control. So you can’t conquer all the chaos or alleviate all the disruptions.

The famous Serenity Prayer talks about accepting thing you cannot change, but being courageous about tackling the things we can.

Is it Time to clean out your computer?

Yes, and there’s an official day for that: National Clean Out Your Computer Day.

This year’s date was February 8. It’s still February, so it’s not too late for you to get into action.

One of my recent spiritual readings talked about releasing clutter. So, the energy of cleaning and decluttering is in the universe.

Do you need to take note?

Disorganization impacts your health and well being.

  • It adds stress to your already busy life.
  • It sucks away your energy and makes you tired.
  • In many people, it increases the symptoms of depression.

Benefits of being organized and getting rid of clutter include...

  • More sleep.
  • A better mood every day.
  • Better relationships.
  • Faster running computer.
  • Able to find things.
  • More time to do things you actually enjoy!

You managers out there should know:

“An organized workplace encourages workers to be productive, reduces work-related stress and saves time -- especially because employees spend less time looking for things. When you establish an efficient workplace, you establish structure. By doing so, workers are able to accomplish more and generate more business.”

Why Organizing the Workplace Is Important

Organizing and de-cluttering is worth doing NOW!

I admit that papers abound in my workspace. And I know there is less frustration when everything is in place.

It’s been said: Clutter in the environment often indicates a cluttered or confused mind.

Purging, cleaning and organizing relieves the stress of searching for things. When life is in order, there is less stress. As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic after a year, finding ways to escape and release the global stress should be a priority.

I do much better about ordering my computer than I do with my physical space. To address the “National Clean Out Your Computer Day” being celebrated this month, I have a few tips.

Tip 1

Do you save files on your computer in the “Documents” folder?

Consider the common types of things you save and create folders for each type. Go through your computer and move files into folders. Those that can’t fit into any folder are probably good candidates for deletion.

One example: I watch a lot of webinar trainings. I save my notes for those trainings in an Education folder. And if I do a lot of trainings on a particular subject or by a particular person, I create sub folders for that.

Another example: I use the free Groove platform, which includes access to partner softwares. So I have a folder for Groove and subfolders for things like Chatmatic and Slingly

Tip 2

If you utilize Outlook, it may be helpful to utilize the folders there as well.

Since you can search on category, utilize the Contacts category feature to organize your contacts.

Ninja tip: Did you know you can drag email messages to Outlook folders, contacts, calendar and tasks. So, no need to retype the information. (You’ll grow to hate emails with ALL their info in images, because that information will have to be manually typed). Once you’ve dragged your email to the appropriate place, you can delete it.

Tip 3

Make sure you have the latest version of all software. Update as needed. Delete old versions and unneeded .exe files.

Note: Computer backups save data not software. Before deleting, make sure you have a way to access essential software. Since most software is downloadable, this should be a simple process.

Tip 4

Run your defragment, malware and antivirus programs.

Tip 5

Backup your computer. Use one of the online backup services. This will be invaluable when you get your next computer. Additionally, it’s good to invest in one the compact affordable external hard drives to back up your critical files.

I completely agree! A someone who is notoriously bad at saving everything, for almost ever, on their desktop, the feeling of clearing off the computer and the desk is almost a zen state of mind.
