Last week, a compressor bearing failure reminded me about a news which I read a couple of years ago, about the death of a woman when she received the wrong blood type during a transfusion. The reason being “post-transfusion ABO incompatibility hemolysis” — a medical emergency that results from the rapid destruction of red blood cells when a patient receives an incorrect blood type.
Although the Cases in which a patient receives the wrong blood during a transfusion are “exceedingly rare,” according to a senior doctor, Death occurs once in 1.8 million blood transfusions.
Now coming back to the subject of rotating machinery that rides on a thin 10 micron film of lubricant, the role of lubricant is similar to the life blood in the humans. Unfortunately, the level of awareness about the risks of cross-contamination between various lubricants is very poor among majority of the persons handling these machines and that results in loosing millions of dollars in terms of Maintenance cost and lost production.

8 年Mohammad, this is so true! This needs to be also duplicated for any repairs to equipment off site as I have experienced so many anomalies in regards to lubrication which have cost us much downtime.

8 年are you going to tell machinery manufacturers that they will have to choose which lubricant goes in their machine form a list you have compiled?

8 年My company has developed a product (still in the testing phase but ready to go) that will eliminate so many problems. As a concentrate, it is used as the lubricant and way oil, and when diluted with water it is the coolant and cutting fluid. 8 年There is a desperate need to share the awareness to the people involved in handling the lubricants at any stage of the lubricant life cycle (from lubricant manufacturing / blending upto the lubricant disposal from machine) so that it is treated with the right 'Attitude' what it deserves. This will reduce the frequency of lubrication failures and eventually improve the reliability performance of machinery.
The analogy is also used by the oil and equipment monitoring services (OCM and ECM) that SGS provide. To help explain this service we say it is just like a blood test taken by your GP. That is, we are able to identify problems through chemical and physical testing of the lubricant. If the samples are taken regularly we can predict failures and minimise or avoid downtime.
