The need for the best of humanity in leadership

It’s been a strange few weeks…

I spent a wonderful week in Denmark with an amazing group of expert leaders working on themselves and who they want to be as leaders in the organisation. And on the TV in my hotel room, I had the BBC news telling me about what was happening in Israel and Gaza.

I wondered whether I would write anything about this. I don’t know enough about the history of this situation to really comment in any way (although I have been reading lots lately). But as someone who talks about leadership, who has a view on what good leadership looks and sounds like, after having written two newsletter about the qualities I feel are important in leadership today, I felt I had to.

In the last two newsletters, I’ve spoken about the following qualities as essential in leadership:

Clarity

Care

Curiosity

Collaboration

Courage

Challenge

And I’ve witnessed one prominent leader display these qualities in the last few weeks - António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations.

He has been very clear about what he believes is the right way to go

He has shown that a priority is to care for all humans - whether that be Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks and bring back its hostages or for civilians in Gaza to be able to find safety, clean water, food, hospitals,etc.

He has shown the curiosity and courage to go see for himself what is happening on the ground

He has encouraged collaboration across the region in order to find a solution

He has challenged some of the biggest nations in the world to rethink their approach and to call for a ceasefire.

To me this shows not only leadership but also the best of humanity.? How can we condone the blockade of a people in a small strip of land followed by the bombing of that land? How can we agree to people in Gaza being told to flee to the south and then the south is also bombed? All in the name of defending oneself from terrorists.

We need to urge our leaders to think more broadly, to find better ways of defending our countries and our people, without killing the innocent people of another land. Yes, the attacks from some of the people of Hamas were horrific and must be stopped AND killing innocent children in Gaza is not a humane response nor is it effective at achieving the objective of stopping the terrorists.

Let’s focus on being the best of ourselves, on finding solutions that will benefit all humans on all sides. Please…
