Is there a need for Arc Flash Study and Analysis?

An arc flash is the rapid release of electrical energy caused by an electrical fault in an electrical circuit that exceeds the short circuit current rating of the circuit. The amount of energy released during an Arc Flash incident can be enormous — typically ranging from several tens of kilojoules to several hundred Kilojoules per incident. The resulting energy can severely injure or even kill a person exposed to it.

The need for Arc Flash Study and Analysis has been steadily increasing over the past few years. There are a variety of reasons for this.?

One reason is that Arc Flash incidents are becoming more common. This increased frequency is due to a growing awareness of the potential hazards associated with Arc Flash.?

Another reason is that the safety requirements that have been put in place in most industries are more stringent than they used to be. As a result, it is more important than ever for people working in these industries to understand the nature of Arc Flash and the hazards that it poses so that they can take steps to mitigate those risks.

When it comes to assessing the risk of an Arc Flash incident, it is important to remember that every facility is different and each has its own unique set of risks and challenges. As a result, there is no one right way of analyzing the risks of a workplace in Arc Flash or of devising the right corrective actions to address those risks. Nevertheless, there are a number of steps that companies can take to improve their overall understanding of the risks of Arc Flash and to formulate appropriate strategies for managing those risks. Some of these steps include the following:

  1. Conduct a risk assessment to identify all of the factors that may contribute to the risk of an Arc Flash incident. Assess these risks to determine the likelihood and potential consequences of an Arc Flash incident.?
  2. Identify the main sources of Arc Flash in the facility and develop mitigation strategies for each source to reduce the risk of an Arc Flash incident.?
  3. Develop and implement a safety training program for employees and other key personnel to raise awareness about the risks associated with Arc Flash and to help reduce those risks.?
  4. Develop and implement policies and procedures designed to prevent Arc Flash from occurring and to mitigate the effects of an Arc Flash incident if it does occur.?
  5. Include an assessment of the electrical distribution system, electrical system protection equipment, arc flash study results, and training as part of the regular inspections and testing performed on the electrical system to ensure that it is working properly and identify any potential problems that could be contributing to the risk of an Arc Flash incident.?
  6. Conduct periodic reviews and assessments of the effectiveness of the company’s Arc Flash prevention program and identify areas for improvement.?
  7. These reviews should be used to identify any areas that may require additional training or modification to the company's safety policies or procedures.
