The Necktie: A Symbol of Unethical Practices That Should Be Abolished

The necktie, often seen as a symbol of professionalism and elegance in modern society, has origins steeped in practices that many would consider unethical today. Tracing its roots back to the 17th century, the necktie, or “cravatte,” was inspired by Croatian mercenaries who served in the Thirty Years' War. These mercenaries, soldiers for hire, fought not out of loyalty or national allegiance but for monetary gain. Their practices and the nature of their work are associated with several unethical behaviors that cast a shadow over the seemingly benign necktie.

Mercenaries, by definition, fight for profit. This prioritization of personal gain over ethical considerations and loyalty undermines the very principles of honorable service. Historically, mercenaries have been involved in irregular and unconventional warfare, often disregarding established rules of engagement. Their actions, driven by profit rather than principle, frequently lacked accountability and oversight, leading to behaviors that would be considered unethical or even unlawful by today's standards.The necktie, as a symbol derived from such a background, carries with it the weight of these historical practices.

Despite its evolution into a fashion staple, its origins remain a reminder of the unethical roots from which it sprang. In light of this, it is worth questioning whether the continued wearing of neckties is appropriate. By abolishing the necktie, we can symbolically reject the unethical behaviors associated with its history and move towards a more principled and accountable representation of professionalism in our attire. Or we can keep wearing it, showcasing our lack of understanding. Those that keep wearing it will thus have to be linked to unethical practices.
