When in drought: don't let your guard down

According to meteorologists from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Medicine Hat just experienced the third-wettest May on record since 1886 with 127 millimetres of precipitation.

While the ground is wet at home, local reservoirs are still below average levels and we rely on the water upstream to ensure we make it through what is predicted to be a hot, dry summer.?That's why Medicine Hat remains in phase 1 of the Water Shortage Management Plan and asks residents to voluntarily conserve water. If we do everything we can now, we can avoid more severe restrictions later on. Don't let your guard down, Medicine Hat.

Debris in power lines

While we're all holding onto our hats in this windy weather, it's a great time to remind you that windblown debris can cause power outages when contacting a power line.

This photo from April shows refuse that blew into nearby power lines causing nearly 100 customers to lose power. But do you know one of the main power outage culprits (aside from tree branches)? It's aluminum balloons! So please, keep your helium foil balloons inside so they don't disrupt power for all your neighbours.?

Budget commitment #4

Five commitments underpin the 2025-2026 budget planning process. Here is commitment #4:

Thoughtful use of reserves for future needs: Our financial reserves represent a critical asset for addressing future challenges and seizing future opportunities, including energy transition, abandonment and reclamation obligations, and other opportunities such as Facilities for the Future. We will exercise thoughtful discretion in utilizing these reserves to meet the evolving needs of our community and clearly articulate the intent of these funds.?

Stay tuned next week for commitment #5, or read all five on our Shape Your City page.
