Nearly 90 years of guarding with honour and dignity
Since it's establishment in 1935, the Shrine Guard has played a unique role in the history of policing in Australia, carrying out permanent and around-the-clock guard duties at the Shrine of Remembrance.
The role was originally established in response to repeated cases of petty vandalism at the Shrine and was first assigned to Victoria Police Constables from the St Kilda Road Police Station before being transferred to the Victoria Police Protective Services Unit in 1990.
Today, there are 25 Protective Services Officers who are qualified to undertake the Shrine Guard role, assisting in ceremonial duties in specialist military-style uniform, maintaining vigils and providing a proactive presence at the Shrine of Remembrance. Twenty-four-hour security is now maintained by Protective Services Officers.
Inspector Georgie Swinton explains that the Shrine Guard is one-of-a-kind and an honourable experience for officers to undertake.
With its historical link to Victoria Police, the highly respected Shrine Guard role is much sought after for ceremonial duties, which now extends beyond the original role at the Shrine of Remembrance.? A unique high-profile role within Victoria Police.
Being a Shrine Guard is not only a role filled with honour, pride and tradition, but opens you up to countless opportunities in a variety of other roles within the Protective Services Unit and Victoria Police.
