Near-Death to New Life: My Journey of Finding Strength Through Adversity
Resilience is not just about surviving, it's about thriving. It is about optimizing the challenges we face by turning them into opportunities for growth and learning, and using the inner strength we develop to achieve our goals and dreams. It is about turning our life setbacks into our comebacks without any limitations.
When I was a young artist/musician, working tirelessly to make a name for myself in the music industry, my life changed in a split second when I was suddenly attacked and nearly killed by a gang of strangers. This shocking incident changed my life forever, but in the greatest way.
?I was in my mid-20s and working on song demos for my own band. After Burlap to Cashmere disbanded and the band was booted from my dream label Interscope Records. It was a really really tough time, but I was determined to keep going until I succeeded or I was dead, there was no in between for me. I used to say I'd rather be dead than not be successful, but I never imagined that this death would be coming for me by the hands of someone else. After a long recording session at my studio in Dumbo Brooklyn, I met up with a friend at a bar in New York City on the corner of Spring and Varick. That's when things took a life altering terrifying turn.

Out of nowhere, a one-time famous rapper aggressively approached my friend and accused him of copying his style of music. Things quickly escalated, with the rapper and his friends becoming physically intimidating, threatening and flashing their guns in their waistbands. Out of fear for his life my friend very quickly walked away. The rapper and his entourage, who were insane for reasons I don't understand, turned their rage on ME. I was beaten, strangled nearly to death, and left lying motionless on the ground. Paralyzed with fear, I felt my life slipping away as my skull was smashed repeatedly into a metal street lamp. All I could hear was the ringing inside the lamp post as my head was repeatedly smashed over and over again and my skull echoed through the hollow center of the steel. It was the 1st time in my life that I felt pure terror and complete helplessness.
Thankfully, I survived this brutal attack, but the road to recovery was a long and challenging one. I suffered a severe concussion and a year of vocal damage. Through it all, I remained resilient and determined to keep creating. In fact, I credit this experience with the birth of my then clothing company and career that launched my success since. I had to put music on hold for a while. It helped me to become a better person and a much stronger businessman. When you go through something like that, you realize that every day is a gift. It changes your perspective on life. It made me more grateful for my health, personal safety and all the things that I have. It made me more focused on what really matters.
It’s a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Even in the darkest moments, we always have the capacity to bounce back, to find hope, to keep moving forward as well as shed a great deal of light in the process. It's a lesson that we can all learn from, whether we're facing a life-threatening situation or simply struggling through our day to day challenges of trying to find our purpose in this world. Life is full of ups and downs, but it's how we respond to those challenges that defines who we are and what we stand for. We can either give up or keep fighting. I choose to keep fighting, no matter what happens to me until the day I die.
There’s so much more to this story but not enough room in my day, I will save it for when I write and release my book…Jamison
