A Near-Death Experience That Changed My Perspective on Life

A Near-Death Experience That Changed My Perspective on Life

On November 27, 2024, I had a life-changing experience that I can only describe as a near-death encounter. I was riding my scooter to the office from my home in Kharadi, Pune, navigating the busy roads with ongoing construction projects and towering IT parks under development. Around 12:35 PM, as I followed a large truck carrying iron rods, an incident unfolded that I will never forget.

The truck, open at the back, was carrying iron rods loosely tied with ropes. As it approached a speed breaker on Dhole Patil College Road, the impact caused several heavy rods—roughly 10 to 12—to slide off at a terrifying speed. They fell from the top of the heap, barely missing me. I instinctively manoeuvred my scooter to the left, narrowly escaping what could have been a deadly accident. The iron rods landed at eye level, and had I hesitated for even a moment, I wouldn’t be here to share this story.

The shock was overwhelming—my heartbeats were up, my feet went cold, and for a few moments, my mind was frozen. This incident made me question not only the safety standards and ethics of such logistics practices but also the fragility of life itself.

In developed countries, heavy vehicles carrying such materials are enclosed, ensuring safety for all. Here, a truck designed for dump loads was misused to transport iron rods, endangering lives. Whether it’s a policy gap or failure to follow rules, the blame game is irrelevant when lives are at stake. What matters is ensuring ethical practices and stringent enforcement of safety measures to avoid such tragedies.

Reflections on Life and Priorities

That moment of survival reshaped my perspective on life. It reminded me of the preciousness of every second and how little control we truly have. Life, as I see it now, is short and transitory. Anger, jealousy, fear, happiness—they are all temporary. What truly matters is how we treat others and the memories we create along the journey.

As I reflect on my journey, I realize how my attitude has changed over time. The arrogance of youth has given way to humility, patience, and gratitude. Experiences and responsibilities have taught me the value of staying positive and grounded, no matter the situation.

Our actions, especially as leaders—whether at work or home—have a ripple effect. Children, teams, and communities often mirror the behavior they observe. Emotional intelligence and balanced reactions are essential for nurturing healthy relationships and inspiring others.

A Life Worth Living

This incident also made me reconsider material possessions and the legacy we leave behind. The homes, cars, and bank balances we accumulate will mean nothing once we depart this world. What remains are the memories we create, the kindness we show, and the love we spread.

During the COVID pandemic, we witnessed countless young lives cut short, reminding us that tomorrow is never guaranteed. While saving money for the future is important, it shouldn’t come at the expense of living our lives fully in present. Spend wisely, create meaningful experiences, and cherish the present—it’s all we truly have.

Living in the Moment

Worrying about the past or future robs us of the beauty of the present. Instead of dwelling on regrets or uncertainties, we should focus on making the most of today. If we do our best now, the future will take care of itself.

This experience reinforced my belief in celebrating life’s journey, appreciating milestones, and embracing positivity. Life is unpredictable, but that’s what makes it beautiful. Let’s live with purpose, gratitude, and an open heart.

Cheers to new beginnings and living life to the fullest! ??
