NDOT Offering an In-House ELDT Program

Back in 2022 the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) embraced the new federal requirements for Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for all new or upgrading CDL holders. Facing long waitlists, significant downtime, and escalating costs with external training providers, NDOT developed an in-house CDL Training Program which launched in January 2023. Since then, the program has achieved remarkable results.?

Key Achievements:

  • Trained 101 new CDL holders in the first year.?
  • Saved thousands of dollars per trainee.?
  • Training sessions were scheduled to match operational needs.?

Program Highlights:

  • Tailored to NDOT’s specific operational challenges.?
  • Internal ELDT trainers with real-world experience.?
  • Reduced reliance on external providers, cutting costs and downtime.?

The program demonstrates NDOT's commitment to innovation and efficiency, setting a new standard for CDL training. As NDOT looks ahead, the focus remains on enhancing and expanding the program to meet evolving workforce and industry needs, ensuring continued success and safety on Nebraska’s roads.?

This is a good thing. However, the trucking companies need to step up their driver orientation training programs. I was a good driver with some experience when I joined my first company and still spent 4-weeks with two different driver-trainers before they turned me loose with my own truck. I managed to haul 500K miles in 48 states and Canada with only one "accident" (a car drove under/into the front corner of my truck at a stop light). OTR drivers need to regain their professionalism. ??
