NDEAM Resources: Courses for Learning about Accessibility and Disability Inclusion

Welcome to the first issue of Making Work Accessible! October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and all month long, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite resources on accessibility and disability inclusion in the workplace.

But first, why is there a National Disability Employment Awareness Month?

NDEAM is celebrated in October each year to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and to educate the public about disability employment issues. There are several reasons why NDEAM is important:

  • To celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities: People with disabilities are a crucial part of the workforce, and they make significant contributions to our economy and society. NDEAM is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate those contributions and accomplishments.
  • To educate the public about disability employment issues: Many people still have misconceptions about the abilities of people with disabilities in the workforce. NDEAM is an opportunity to educate the public about these issues and to promote understanding and acceptance.
  • To advocate for employment opportunities for people with disabilities: People with disabilities often face barriers to employment and accommodations. NDEAM is an opportunity to advocate for policies and practices that promote equal and inclusive employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

NDEAM was first established in 1945 as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

By taking part in NDEAM, you can help to create a more inclusive and accessible workplace for everyone.

Today's newsletter features over a dozen courses on accessibility and disability inclusion from providers like LinkedIn for Learning , IxDF - The Interaction Design Foundation , 微软 , eCornell , and more. I have done some sorting by topic and provider for easier navigation. Please let me know if you've taken a course I should add to these lists!

What else is in the works for NDEAM? In addition to courses, I can't wait to share additional resources like podcasts, videos, newsletters, and influencers to follow in accessibility and disability inclusion in the workplace. There is really no excuse for not furthering your own education this month with so many resources available!

If you just can't wait for the next newsletter, you can catch each of my posts as they come out by following Inclusive Pixelation on LinkedIn or subscribing to my blog at https://inclusivepixel.com/blog/ - until next time!
