NCC rescues national treasures
NCC not only constructs new buildings, we also save old ones. Following the renovation of more than twenty heritage buildings, NCC in Finland is now market leading in architectural conservation. This autumn, restoration will begin of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs building in central Helsinki. The Ministry consists of eight buildings, whereof the oldest section was constructed back in 1820.
Other buildings that NCC has renovated recently in Helsinki include Aalto University’s main building Dipoli and the National Library of Finland. Two buildings with architecture from completely different eras, the classical National Library was completed in 1845 and the modern and distinct Dipoli in 1966.
This type of refurbishment projects really requires respect for the building. There are strict rules covering what construction workers may and may not do. All valuable historical surfaces must be protected and the materials must be handled with the utmost care.
The university and library are once again hubs of activity, filled with students and visitors, and the buildings will continue to stand for many years to come. We are now looking forward to start working on yet another historic site with the Ministry.
