The Brazilian Navy announced on Monday (6) the dispatch of the Atlantico, the largest warship in Latin America, to assist the population of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The vessel will depart from the Naval Base of Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (8) bound for the city of Rio Grande (RS), located on the southern coast of Brazil. The journey is expected to take three days.
The Multipurpose Amphibious Ship Atlantico, which is 200 meters long, can carry up to 1,400 military personnel and 18 aircraft. It will bring 8 small boats and 2 water treatment stations to Rio Grande do Sul.
In addition to its potable water production capabilities, the ship features a medical center—the second largest in the Navy’s fleet, surpassed only by the Dock Landing Ship (NDM) Bahia, which was used to assist victims of historic floods.
According to the Brazilian Navy, the water treatment stations aboard the Atlantico use chemical filtration equipment. The process involves capturing river water, passing it through pre-filtration, and then undergoing a secondary filtration process after sedimentation. The result is potable water, ready for human consumption. The two stations have the capacity to produce 20,000 liters of water to help meet the demand of the affected cities.
