Navigating your Job Search With These 6 Steps

Navigating your Job Search With These 6 Steps

We have all been in some sort of job search in our career - when we first started, when we made our own career move and when we have been forced to look for other opportunities.

The process can be painful, difficult, confusing and full of emotions. I went through this process in the early part of 2021 and want to share the stages of the job search process that I went through.

Not all searches are the same, not all experiences are the same, and what I’m sharing is what worked for myself. These are only recommendations - make the adjustments that fit your search.

My 6 steps to the job search process

  1. Clear Job Search Plan - The job search plan is a sharable document that is a valuable start to your search. It helps you stop, think and understand what your next move is and it also helps others understand what you are looking for in detail. You have to be able to understand your what and why, this document does that. Download your job search plan template here. https://b2the7.com/career-resources/
  2. Resume Personalization - When I mention your resume and personalization, it refers to making sure your objectives and responsibilities meet those within the job listing. This isn’t making stuff up but aligning your resume for what the company is asking for. This is very important for matching and being a fit.
  3. Target Companies and Recruiters - Within the job search plan, you will identify the companies you want to work for and target. Research and start following those brands - identify who you know that is connected with each brand. Create a spreadsheet for reference with the company and connections.
  4. Networking and Engaging - Networking and engaging are critical in your search. You want to comment, engage, along with being active with the connections you identified above. Build a relationship first and then reach out with what you are looking for. There are also many recruiters that can help - engage with them as well and share what you are looking for. You are essentially “selling” what you do without selling - you are really “social selling” yourself.
  5. Research (the company and the people who will interview you) - As you go into the interview, it is important to know as much as possible about the brand as you can. When was it founded, how many employees work there, is the culture good, are they in good financial health and so on. It is also important to research the people that will be interviewing you - how long have they been there, what does their career ladder look like and what is their history. Checkout any mutual connections and reach out to them on their views and perspectives.
  6. Interview Prep - Don’t go into an interview cold, use the resources you have to research the company and people you are interviewing with…it is all here on LinkedIn and social media. This will really help you understand their backgrounds, how they got in the positions they did and help you formulate personal/business questions to ask.

If you do have more questions, always reach out and I will do what I can to help you.

Best of luck in your search!

LinkedIn Profile Tip - Accurate and up to date experiences

Start with a strong opening sentence. After that, the reader must click the “see more” button to read the rest of this section. Next, write an excellent summary using two or three sentences to give the reader an excellent overview of your experience, key accomplishments, and relevant industry expertise. Job search tip of the week - Asking the Right Questions To Have a Conversation and Not a One-Sided Interview

An interview is just as much about you asking questions as it is about the person interviewing you asking questions.

It is important to come prepared, to have done your homework and to have a list of questions that you plan on asking.
