Starting your first job in the security industry is an exciting time. You’re stepping into a field that plays a critical role in keeping people, businesses, and data safe. But it can also feel overwhelming at times, especially when you’re just starting out. The good news? With the right approach, you can make your first year a success and lay a strong foundation for your future career.
Here are some practical tips that will help you navigate your first year in the security industry:
1.?Always Take Notes
One of the most valuable habits you can develop is?taking notes. When I started in the industry, I was constantly bombarded with new information—whether it was learning about security protocols, attending meetings, or receiving feedback from my manager. To keep up, I carried a notebook with me everywhere.
Taking notes helps you remember key details and shows that you're paying attention. For example, during a security audit, I noted down the checklist my senior was using. This not only helped me understand the process but also allowed me to be more prepared the next time I had to handle an audit myself. Trust me, these small efforts can make a big difference in your performance.
2.?Learn from Real-Life Situations
The security industry is full of real-life learning opportunities. Whether it’s responding to a minor security breach or ensuring safety at a large event, every experience offers a chance to grow. During my first year, I was involved in managing a corporate events and visits. There were unexpected challenges, like handling a VIP guest’s security or dealing with overcrowding and seating arrangements. By observing how my seniors handled these issues calmly and efficiently, I learned to think on my feet and manage stressful situations.
When you're faced with a problem, think of it as a learning experience. Ask questions, seek advice, and observe how experienced professionals tackle similar issues.
3.?Build Strong Relationships
In your first year, it's important to build strong relationships with your team and colleagues. The security industry relies heavily on teamwork, networking whether you’re in corporate security, risk management, or cybersecurity. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
When I was new, I reached out to more experienced colleagues for advice on improving my security reports. This not only improved the quality of my work but also helped me build a network of professionals I could rely on. This is only possible when you start participate and attending security conferences such as ASIS, OSAC, CAPSI etc. Remember, relationships matter in security—you never know when a colleague might offer valuable insights or help you in a challenging situation.

4.?Stay Updated on Technology
Technology plays a major role in the security industry, and staying up-to-date is essential. During my first year, I made a point to learn about the security tools we were using, from surveillance systems to access control software. I even spent time outside of work reading about emerging trends like AI in security and cybersecurity measures.
Even if you're not directly involved in technology, having a basic understanding of the tools your company uses can make you more effective. Employers appreciate team members who are eager to learn and adapt to new tech developments.
5.?Stay Calm Under Pressure
Security is all about managing risk, and there will be times when things get stressful. In my first year, I experienced several high-pressure situations—whether it was handling emergency drills or responding to unexpected incidents such as protest of new joiners outside one of my past organization. One of the best pieces of advice I received was to always stay calm. When you remain composed, you can think clearly and act quickly, which is key to resolving security issues efficiently.
If you ever feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath, assess the situation, and rely on the training you’ve received. The more you experience, the more confident you’ll become in handling difficult situations.
6.?Be Open to Feedback
Finally, remember that your first year is all about learning. Be open to feedback from your manager, colleagues, or even clients. When I first started, I made a few mistakes (as everyone does), but I was always open to hearing how I could improve. For example, one of my early reports missed a few key details, and my manager pointed it out. Instead of feeling discouraged, I took that feedback and worked on improving my report-writing skills.
Every bit of feedback you receive is an opportunity to get better at your job. So, listen carefully and use it to grow.
Always Remember !! Your First Year is Your Foundation
Your first year in the security industry is all about laying the groundwork for your future. By taking notes, building strong relationships, staying calm under pressure, and learning from real-life experiences, you’re setting yourself up for success. Remember, the habits and skills you develop now will shape your career. Keep pushing forward, stay curious, and take each challenge as a chance to grow. This is just the beginning, and your potential in the security industry is limitless!
