Navigating the world of AI: How to safely use ChatGPT

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT?is an?artificial intelligence?(AI)?chatbot?developed by?OpenAI?and released in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI's?GPT-3.5?and?GPT-4?families of?large language models?(LLMs).

The original release of ChatGPT was based on?GPT-3.5. A version based on?GPT-4, the newest OpenAI model, was released on March 14, 2023, and is available for paid subscribers on a limited basis.

Decoding GPT: What Does it Stand For?

Generative pre-trained transformers?(GPT) are a family of?LLMs introduced in 2018 by?OpenAI. They are?artificial neural networks?pre-trained on large amounts of text data and designed to learn patterns and structures in human language.

GPT's purpose is to?generate text?(novel human-like text) or?provide insights on language-based data, it can be used for a variety of natural language processing (NLP) tasks, such as language translation, summarization, and question answering.

Exploring GPTs: The Training Process?

GPT models are trained on a large corpus of text data from the internet, typically collected from various sources such as books, articles, and websites. During training, the model predicts the next word in a sentence based on the preceding words, allowing it to learn the structure and patterns of natural language.

As the process is repeated multiple times, the model becomes increasingly skilled at generating new text that is coherent and realistic, closely resembling human language. A result is a powerful tool capable of producing text that is both coherent and credible, effectively emulating the style and substance of the human-composed text.

How to use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT has been designed to interact with human language naturally and intuitively. When used thoughtfully according to the purpose of a language model - to generate or analyze text - and its limitations, it can save time and effort when performing certain tasks.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • ChatGPT has no reasoning capability, it does not understand the meaning of your prompt or the text it generates.?

Keep in mind that ChatGPT doesn't have a human brain and relies on your input to generate responses.?

  • ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers.?This?behaviour?is common to LLMs?and is called "hallucination".
  • It may generate biased or discriminatory content, as the internet content used to train it was created by human beings and is itself biased.
  • ChatGPT has limited knowledge of events that occurred after September 2021, as it was trained on text data from before that time. Therefore, it may not be the best tool to use for certain tasks that require up-to-date information.

Do’s and Dont’s

The versatility of ChatGPT: Functions you can use it for.

  • Brainstorming.
  • Using it as a starting point for research and information gathering.
  • Using it as a copywriter, to produce the first version of the content or to review/improve your text.
  • Modifying the style of a text (formal or informal, for example).
  • Summarizing long texts, extracting the main ideas or identifying key concepts.
  • Explaining complex concepts in an easier way to understand.
  • Generating the first draft of a document such as an agreement or a letter.
  • Generating text in multiple languages.

Limitations of ChatGPT: Functions to avoid using it for

  • Using it as a knowledge base to find references for papers, regulations, etc., as the references or results obtained can be something just made up by the model as the most likely completion for your input.
  • Using it as a search tool, like Google.
  • Use it to make mathematical calculations, especially for figures that are high or for complex calculations, as it is easy for the result to be wrong.
  • ChatGPT should not be used for making important decisions that have significant consequences, as it cannot reason and comprehend context.

Ownership and accountability of the content fed into or generated by ChatGPT.

Both the input and output generated by ChatGPT are collectively referred to as "Content" in OpenAI's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.?

It is important to note that:

  • OpenAI may collect conversations/personal information included in the input, file uploads, or feedback you provide to the tool. This information may be used for providing, administering, maintaining, improving and/or analyzing their services, conducting research, or developing new programs and services.?If you do not want your?ChatGPT?Content used by OpenAI, you can opt-out by filling out a request form.

In case you use the API to interact with GPT, instead of using the chat interface, OpenAI will not use the Content to train or improve their models, unless you explicitly opt to?share your data?with them for?this purpose.

  • You are responsible for the Content you provide, including ensuring that it does not violate any applicable laws.

o If you use ChatGPT to process personal data, such as in the case of data protection law compliance, or disclose proprietary or confidential information as input, you are responsible for it.

o When you input text into ChatGPT, it is processed and stored on OpenAI's servers, which essentially means you are sharing that information with a third party. This information may be shared by OpenAI with authorized third parties and personnel, so only share information that you are comfortable with being processed and potentially accessed by a third party.

  • ChatGPT may generate content that is very similar to training texts protected by copyright, and, as a user, you may be liable when using such content.

Avoid your content being used by Open AI by filling out?the OpenAI Data Opt Out Request (find the link to the form at OpenAI Terms of Use, article 3c.)

In conclusion,?

  • While using ChatGPT, it is important to remember that the content you provide is being processed and stored by OpenAI and can be viewed by authorized personnel.?
  • It is essential to use the tool with caution, and always double-check any information with reliable?sources?before taking any action based on it.
  • By using your critical thinking skills and being diligent in your research, you can ensure that you are using the tool in the right way to achieve your goals.
