Navigating the Workplace While Building Your Brand

Is it just me, or is it sometimes terrifying to think that you might get into trouble for building your brand while being employed? Thoughts like, “Should I mention this?”, “Am I oversharing?” “Is my employer okay with this?” “Will I appear unfocused with my job?” can start to creep in, and the next minute, you hesitate to post and decide you'll start working on your brand when you start your venture.

Is that you? By the end of this article, I hope I can change your mind, so please feel free to stick around.

I get it. It can be nerve-wracking. But I encourage you to ditch those thoughts, which are excuses, and start building your brand.

Looking back, I remember asking my supervisor if I could post my first work-related content on LinkedIn. I was unsure and new to the workplace, wanting to get things right. My supervisor reassured me it was fine. The only thing my contract barred me from doing was speaking on behalf of the organization, which I had no intention of doing.

However, I understand some organizations have strict rules against employees posting on LinkedIn, and my heart goes out to anyone affected by this.

Now, let’s explore tips on building our brands while excelling at work. These two are not mutually exclusive and can complement each other perfectly!

Here's how:

1. Set Your Priorities Straight

Full-time jobs can be demanding, with strict deadlines, long commutes, and numerous tasks. Instead of sleeping on your way to work, draft tomorrow's post, proofread it over lunch or read a book to stay informed and grow. Create time to make things happen in your life!

2. Set Clear Intentions

Understand your goals and aspirations in your brand-building journey and take intentional steps towards achieving them. Define your brand focus, devise a plan, and take action!

3. Leverage Your Skills and Experiences

Utilize the skills and experiences you gain at work to enhance your brand. Share insights, lessons learned, and successes from your job to establish yourself as knowledgeable and credible.

4. Set Realistic Goals

You don't have to post daily to build a brand. Consistency, discipline, and commitment are key. Over time, you will build the momentum to do more.

5. Have Clear Boundaries

To build a brand while working full-time, know your limits. Drop the need to say yes to every webinar, meet-up, and collaboration. Clear boundaries will help you avoid spreading yourself too thin and getting exhausted.

Just to remind you, there are no quick fixes. But with clear priorities, intentionality, boundaries, and realistic goals, you can succeed at work and build your brand.

Let’s engage in the comments by sharing more tips on making this work. Better yet, let us know how you already make it work!

Even for tools relating to doing the job for the employer better, I was surprised to find that in Poland most people prefer to use their personal email (worried they might be told they were doing something not explicitly authorised?), whereas in the UK most people would prefer to use their work email (employer can prevent abuse, personal email is too valuable to risk getting spammed). How does this play out in other countries?
