Navigating the Weight of Leadership — Making Tough Decisions with The Head and The Heart (Part 2)

Last week I highlighted the difficult interplay of letting emotions guide our choices. As leaders, it’s never easy.
When we're the ones calling the shots, difficult decisions can wear on us heavily. Each time I have to make one, I try to protect my emotional and mental well-being so that I can think clearly. This isn't just for my own sake; I need to help my entire team, our leadership, and even our board navigate them.
When the weight gets too heavy for me, I need to know who my pinch hitter is — that person — or people — who can come in and give me a break so I can recharge. For me, this is my executive leadership team. In The Advantage, Patrick Lencioni calls it the First Team. His idea is that every leader needs to prioritize their executive leadership team above all else. Because if this team is solid, we can collectively help the rest of the organization get to where it needs to be.
Leadership is not a journey that's meant to be made alone. It can be lonely at times, and you need those sounding boards to help you stay grounded. Having a strong network, people you can lean on for guidance and support, is helpful personally and also for the health of your organization.
Wisely said. Collaboration and shared vision are essential for impactful leadership.
